??? Noticed I said the customer was in his 30s! He’s 76… but when I try to edit my reply it brings me to Hitests post and not mine. WTF??
Thanks! My next desktop PC will be a used unit (probably Dell)as I’ve had zero problems with them. This is the first time that I’ve had so many problems with used laptops(three duds in a row). The used laptop space on Ebay and Amazon is not as reliable as it once was. So I opted for new. I haven’t bought myself a new computer for decades.
I thoroughly enjoyed your rant. I shudder when I look at Canon printers. LMAO!
I ordered toner for my Brother network printer and it was happily half the price of my old HP printer which is gathering dust in my basement.
That’s weird. I went in and edited your post to say late 70s. I love all of the service work that you do for your community. You do a lot of work for free. Awesome!
So the answer IS… something Canon simply doesn’t tell you anywhere:
The only way to set it up properly is to first connect to your local wireless network. So I brought my giant magnifying glass and even then cursed until I found the little up arrow at the bottom left of the tiny screen to change letter case. Their support site says 'little asterisk in the top right".
A forum told me using their installer simply sends you to the Microsoft store for a Canon Installer App but that’s no longer there, I just reran the Canon software that didn’t work before and ta da!
Well actually had a coffee on the porch while it chugged away and did a lengthy reboot…
You can not install it thru USB or the Direct wireless at all, and that’s something they just don’t tell you.
Must’ve looked like a fool holding that printer edgeways on my lap and holding a magnifying glass in one hand while cursing and poking the stupid control arrows with the other!
4 trips over the course of 5 days!
Love that Mac.
Ordered breakfast today at 7:30
p.m.
Spent the whole day with GoDaddy trying to fix a mail problem while they skittered and danced not listening & trying to sell me even more services.
Online chat no work today, so used the text function. Set the iPhone on Mic so I could talk to text. Opened Messenger on the Mac and FFox server window too, could do all with the Mac.
They have to use FileZilla. Even though their hosting panel links and shows setups for 2 other FTPs. Windows hates FileZilla insists it’s malware unless you jump thru hoops.
Needed to FTP down a mail folder and scan it, reupload it. Wasn’t the problem anyway, that email must be listed on some spam list - it wasn’t even getting into the server. Just wanted me to jump thru hoops for not adding “security” to the hosting plan.
So it’s a domain that was our old ISP portal. Old lady who’s the LAST email on it, after a decade of being asked to get a gmail and send it to me so I could do a mail redirect.
Well too late now lady. Ya had a whole 10 years since that company folded,
Did tell her son, teaching in Korea he could TeamView in, open her Thuinderbird and see all the mail up to June 12 and maybe save the contacts too - but watch out there was something with a PHP exploit in that Send folder. I did set Tbird as Pop mail many years ago.
And that pizza breakfast was meh! Could only stomach 1/2 a 10" after not eating all day.
Actually I do have some fake accounts I used to register places like Juanita_Pigg@thatdomain the Food Reviewer that I use on Yelp and those 10 best restaurants in Quick BC sites,
→ one star, I ate there. Once.

So the new T14 unit is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. It comes with Win 11 Pro and I’m really ambivalent about running Windoze. I’ll be creating a Win 11 USB installation stick in case a Linux install goes awry.
Lenovo and IBM has always been very good with supporting Linux. It looks like the T14 AMD gen 3 is supported. Nice!
https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/pd031426-linux-for-personal-systems
Setup the LAMP server on the Pi with no problems, quickly too. Even have phpMyadmin running and a couple sites (not domains) on it.
Full install Ubuntu 24.04 though I’d not use that for a real website install on a Pi. Just for fun on a local network. Apache2 is way more familiar to me than nginx.
Must add a Wordpress test to it next.
OMG the bank sends another lady that got hackes. Wont enable her online without an invoice that it’s been checked and cleaned.
More than half my work referrals from Credit Union staff… nice!
Just finishing setting up the new Lenovo T14. All is well. Win 11 Pro, AMD 5 Pro CPU, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD. Will probably install Debian on the unit in the next few days.
Just finishing up and creating a Windows 11 USB installation ISO.
Windows 11 gone. Clean install of Debian 12.6. Everything works. Had to google how to toggle off secure boot in the BIOS. I’m happy with the unit.
Looking good! I have Debian12 on a 128SSD for my Pi,. I do like it. My fave at the moment is the RasperryOS Bookworm with KDE plasma on another.
So I’m fed up to here with GoDaddy, looking for another host.
I have several domains, with each hosted on folders within the master. A handful of ppl pay me a small fee to host a site and take care of everything for them. They just have their own Wordpress access.
Found the practices totally predatory, every damn little thing is ‘another level’ and another added costs, they do things and then deny it and serv reps are in a massive hurry to end the call and try to sell you even more. They’re now pushing me to buy ‘security’ offering 3 names like basic, pro & premium without any explanation of exactly what is. Finally gave up uploading SSL certs for every domain every 6 months and cost a fortune, then they moved servers losing some files, never warned DMARC records were ‘optional’, provided a DKIM for only the main domain and didn’t even enable the feature button in cPanel to add such advanced mail features (another ‘level’ - extra cost). Three days waiting and fighting with reps and eventually got it done myself. Only 3 hours later my sites came up Forbidden, logged into cPanel - got a Enjoy New Look message and discovered all the root directories were empty. “They never did it”… had to get them to restore it from backup as I couldn’t even do that through my main account! Enuff’s enuff.
Any recommendations? Barely any traffic they’re all obscure sites, no sales all WordPress and 1 PhpBB site.
BTW all this started from a kid overseas calling about his Mom’s email bouncing. Turns out she was the LAST mail user of our old ISP mail and after 11 years and multiple warnings to get a Gmail like the rest of the world, still hadn’t.
And like a typical local that grew up here, he’s short on brains and long on gall. Pestering by email what a jerk I was because I could’ve just “given” him the domain so he could restore her mailbox rather than listing it with for sale with afternic. Like who do I think I am asking him to make them an offer and if it’s above the floor price I’ll agree… sheesh!
My wife’s iPhone 8+ is slowly losing its ability to hold a charge, it’s a hand me down from me. I’m giving her my iPhone 14 Pro Max which has Apple Care until November. I ordered an iPhone 15+ for myself. I think this is a better move as I’m not sure that Apple would give me a decent price for the Pro Max. Looking forward to the new phone arriving on the 30th.
Just received a quote from Bluehost that was a couple hundred MORE than what I pay GoDaddy. So much for that!
Hey if you’re able to host at your own place, you should look into cloudflare tunnels (or open source versions). No need for firewall configs or reverse proxy servers. I’m using it for a few domains for my work computer. Basically an HP workstation running 3 different websites in VMs and they appear as normal internet websites thanks to cloudflare. Zero cost.
Honestly I would but I’m too old and trying to slough off as much of the work as I can. Gave up my own server bank 12 years back and just setting up one site on a Pi to play with.
Only got 10Mb upload but that would be enough for the limited and localized sites I have.
So more offers, all even more.
Price of everything has gone up, hosting too I guess.
Just gave me a box of 4 apple fritters for 1/2 price at GougeOn - was marked at $8.49! Last summer they were $1 at the bakery.
Liberul math: 100 + 2.7% = $2.12 yup yup,
I find it baffling that a mega company like Apple uses Fed Ex Canada as their shipping company. Their package tracking system is unsatisfactory. Why not UPS or Canada Post?
Waiting for my iPhone 15+. Haha.
