Election Nonsense
I will also add what you said about Justin Case seems to be very true in regards to his always speaking the truth when it comes to issues he believes in.
I missed that part. Didn’t he just say Justin speaks with conviction? As far as truth goes, I don’t see a lot of that in this thread; just a whole lot o’ mudslinging. Eh. But that’s politics, I suppose.

Just because it’s mud, it doesn’t mean it’s not true.

When it’s just an insult, without any facts supporting it, I tend to give the target of the insult the benefit of the doubt and assume it’s untrue. I’m funny that way.

So if Spider warned me that you like to kick people between the legs and you did it me, it’s okay?

Whether you think someone is an idiot or not, it’s not socially acceptable to use that kind of language towards someone–maybe children, but adults are supposed to have a filter. Howbout you talk about his politics, without any insults. Are you capable of doing that?

Being a Showboat or an individual who has the gift of the gab does not make one a politician to me. This not meant as an insult now just my thoughts.

This one is a keeper, eccentric.  Ironic.

You seem to have more of an issue with Spider and Justin Case than you do with any of the issues in this election. Very anal retentive and boring.  Grow up and move on, please !

WELL, the shoe does fit…

What size do you wear ?

So there was Gordon Campbell making some b/s comment about how his libs are looking towards the next generation wanting things put in place for their years, well who the hell is going to paying for this dog and Pony show 2010? Then on another station is the stand in financial minister talking of why the libs will not or have not raised the minimum wage as most other provinces have, too costly well let go back to the 2010 Dog and Pony show. Then they fixed Fredrick street which was not really that bad for driving, not too costly but in time for an election move, good one Herbie.

You fools have fun with your election. I am abandoning society and am off to sail the world.

depending if the offer on the sailboat is accepted…

… also depending if i learn how to sail.

I think that this exchange has less to do with what is or is not socially acceptable commentary and more to do with which side of the political fence one is on. I suspect that if Justin Case described Pond’s NDP opponent as an ‘idiot’ similar allegations would be made by Mr Coons’ supporters.

I doubt that there would be grumbles of discontent or howls of protest from Pond headquarters, or from posters who support that cause, about the low depths, the depravity almost to which political discourse has sunk and the need for more ‘adult’ behaviour.

There is of course always some difference between telling someone they are an ‘idiot’ (in the second person) and referring to someone as an idiot (in the third person). Can someone be insulted in absentia? I think that the bar is lower yet when the comment is about a politician.

Sometimes during a campaign, a candidate will step into the media spotlight to issue a grim-faced statement, distancing themselves from an unfortunate remark, or an ad that slipped out, alluding to an opponent’s background, a physical impairment or even a past indiscretion. There seems to be a bit of a code among politicans that their respective hacks do not always adhere to.

No candidate, though, is about to complain that a politican has been referred to as an ‘idiot’. In the arena of a political campaign that is nothing. In Ottawa honourable members opposite have been called Taliban sypathisers. No big deal apparently. While I think that there should be some decorum, I just do not see HTMF aspiring to loftier heights than what politicans practice or seem concerned about.

Irony is this coming from eccentric.  I think she was the one who spoke of sending a hitman out to take out a political opponent?  Wasn’t she the one who was making fun of someone’s typos a few threads back?  Eccentric only complains when others sling mud, not when she does it.

Sounds like you need a break. While you are bobbing around out there away from the warmth of human companionship with some spare time on your hands you might practice using the ‘Backspace’ key.

I am still kind of wondering who the burned out EX: Inlander Hotel will be voting for???
Haven’t seen any signs there yet. LOL

Good luck with this, but you might want to get some knowledge and experience on a sailboat first?

Well, Jesus, you can always walk.

Good point, and I guess no one at HTMF has ever claimed that it’s the best medium for mature political discussion. If someone wants to call someone an idiot, scum, shallow, stupid–whatever–they can dig as many holes in their own credibility as they want.

I lol’ed.

If Larry Hope is already a Larry, that would only leave 2 possibilities for Pond, would Campbell be the third Stooge

Of course the context of the discussion has been what people say about politicians, particularly in this riding, not what they say about each other, including in a low-brow forum like HTMF.

I agree that ‘scum’ goes too far and detracts from credibility. I would hope that none of the candidates would be described in such terms.

If someone says that a politician is an ‘idiot’ I do not think that sensibilities are that offended, unless someone is excessively fond of a particular candidate. The consequences of government decision-making can seem rather idiotic at times to ordinary citizens. It takes no great leap in imagination to wonder if that says something about the intelligence of certain politicians.

I think that ‘shallow’ is well within the realm of fair comment. That can refer to character or performance. Mr Pond’s campaign seems to be more about being our best buddie than substance or debate. Perhaps his campaign team feels that is the best way to get elected, or maybe that is the best that he can do. I honestly don’t know. I assumed until a few weeks ago that I would vote for him, but I find myself asking ‘why’. That is just an honest comment from an undecided voter.

As for ‘stupid’, I do not recall anyone saying that of Herb. That seems redundant with ‘idiot’.

I have never seen a more condesending comment on HTMF since I’ve been here. I’ve stated before that I thought that Mike Harcout had courage to resign over the bingo-gate scandal. Our esteemed premiere has either broken or flouted the law…broken as in a DUI, not adhereing to contacts etc etc etc… or his defending of Patrick Kinsella as a lobbyist who really isn’t a lobbyist.
