So, what do think of a by-law against alcohol and ATMs being available in gaming centers in city limits?

I mean aside from the fact it only means they would set up outside city limits.

As far as I know… no alcohol is served at the Bingo Hall now… so why would there be once it moves? It’s going to be a gaming centre… not a casino.

What if someone adopts the Marge Simpson Syndrome? There will be alot of sad Homer’s.

Yes, they are intending to serve alcohol at the new gaming center. The liquor licence will - apparently - have to be approved by the City too. I know several people whose only objection is to the alcohol being served.

This is from the City’s Notice of Public Hearing re: gaming centre:
At the proposed new location, the Bingo Association is proposing to develop a Community Gaming Center that will not only offer bingo and slot machines, but possibly other electronic gaming, as well as non-gaming entertainment such as video games, billiards, darts, entertainment stages, as well as food and alcoholic beverage service.

I’m surprised by the alcohol statement. AFAIK and I’m going by other casino’s Ive visited in BC, there is no booze served. But as this is a ‘gaming center’ there will probably be no alcohol there either. Its not allowed in BC to have any alchoholic beverages served in a place where one can gamble, bingo or otherwise.

The one in PG has a pub on one end of the complex and the casino on the other end. You have to leave the place, go outside and enter the pub.

Ive been to the one in Victoria, no booze. There is one in New West at the New West Quay and no booze there.

Vegas and Reno on the other hand, just sit in front of a slot and put a dime in every once in a while and someone will come by and take your order.

So I would find it curious on how they will allow alcohol on the premises when other places like it dont.

Guess ill have to get wasted before i go then

Booze makes me a way better gambler, and I want no part of one without the other.

Well, the drinking age notwithstanding, the US always had more lax alcohol laws vis-a-vis Canada. Especially in Nevada: there, booze and gambling go together like peanut butter and jam. After all, that’s what built that whole state.

The booze flows like water there for the same reason there are no windows or clocks in casinos: they want to forget how long you’ve been there so as to keep you there, and keep you losing your money as long as possible. It’s also why they comp people when they lose, rather than when they win: to make them feel better about having dumped their money.

Canada, on the other hand, has always been rather puritanistic when it comes to so-called “vices.” The government seems to think it’s their job to protect people from themselves. It’s only until very recently that they’ve allowed any kind of non-government- or non-charity-related gambling at all.

…case in point.

Everytime I’ve gone to the Casino in Prince George I have been wasted. It’s a great time!

This has got to be one of the worst ideas for an economically downtrodden community to embrace. Prince Rupert is very vulnerable for all the evil fall out that such a center shall cause. Better get more insurance and car alarms cuz crime rates are gonna reach a new high for Rupert which already has a lot of crime for it’s siz, you just never hear about all of it in the local media. The payday loans outlets are gonna be happy with all the extra business. Remember to check the pawn shop for those lost and stolen items. This is a bad bad baaaaad idea! Passed by city council with only one dissenter. Sheesh. Gambling prospered during the great depression but it didn’t do anything for the poor and hungry.

Since the gaming center is a go, I can’t see serving alcohol being much of an issue. At the worst drinking will be allowed on the game floor (probably against bc law) and at best in a seperate area within the same complex. The games will take credit cards and any other worst case scenario you can dream up.

Our community will be affected weather you go to the casino or not, and it wont be for the better.

You people dont make sence.

We already have a bingo hall
Every store in prince rupert has Keno
Every store in prince rupert has 6/49 bc/49 super 7, and a few new games.
The mall has a racin game
Every store in prince rupert has scratch and wins.
The internet is Loaded with gambling games that acept credit cards
people are playin texas hold em at there houses gambling

And the only thing new this gaming centre is going to bring is slot machines.

So why would someone go steal someones TV, sell it and go play slots when the payout isnt even that high?
Prince Rupert is basicaly a gamin centre right now.

I think people are also missing the basic point: city council had no right to deny the license. Gaming centres are legal. People may find them to be morally dubious but, until they are made illegal, we have no more right to stop one than we do to stop bars because they serve “evil” alcohol or restaurants because they serve “evil” fatty foods.

It is not any goverment’s job to protect people from themselves. They can tell me that it’s bad to gamble and smoke and drink and eat chocolate bars and watch the O.C. but they can’t make me not do it.

Yay, for frickin’ freedom!!

I definitely think that this will bring some positives to our city. This is something that potentially will bring people to our town to spend money rather than leaving to spend it. Kitimat has an abundance of industrial workers with alot of money looking for a weekend getaway. With this and the Hydro development maybe we can get a few more people spending here than in Terrace. Our local hotels and restaurants will do well, jobs will be created. Alot of people seem to have the mindset that only only poor and under priveliged gamblers will be negatively affected. I see it differently. Although there will be negative impacts I believe that the results of this development will be mostly beneficial to our city.

I can’t wait will we finally get a casino here.

how can they have a casino center without tables? they have slot machines in every pub and boston pizza back in alberta. I can’t see why people would even bother bother complaining about slot machines only.

Where’s the gaming centre supposed to be?
