Amazon is evil, but, I do like Amazon Prime for faster delivery, movies, and their unlimited photo storage. I do feel a bit uneasy that I’m bought and paid for. Heh.
The free 3 mo Apple+ that came with my Mini sold me on that one. For All Makind, Man in the High Castle…. hooked!
Slow Horses!
Junking a QuadCore 6600…. what a slug.
So old I remember ppl bragging about them new. Junked the last one that was running as a Fedora 4 web server 12 yeara ago.
My latest technology addiction is Casio watches. I ordered a Casio GWG-B1000 slate grey unit. At the moment it’s moving through the Japanese postal system (in Kanagawa). After this purchase I think I’m done with buying watches. I don’t have any other technology items to buy right now. In a year or two I’ll get a new iPhone.
She wanted me to add her hubby as a user on that Lenovo… HYG we’re talkiing 6 min boot, 5 min to start Edge, 5 more to load the page and two or three mins to responf to a click. Could barely keep up with the keyboard. Windows so messed up and running on a Win7 OEM uograde key, hopeless.
He’s getting it back with a used SSD and RasPi OS 386. Runs berrer than it did brand new.
Would’ve upgraded the RAM but I binned all my DD2 years ago. 4 GB is just fine, I didn’t even noticed one stick was unseated until I went to close it up! All the setup, installs & testing was done on only 2GB RAM.
One less Windows infestation on the world wide web. My buddy had a perfectly usable, older Windows 10 box with 4 GB RAM and a 460 GB HD. Not up-gradable to Win 11. I put Ubuntu 24.04.3 on it. It runs better now than Windoze. Linux automagically identified everything including his nice, newer Brother network printer. I love putting new life into perfectly good PCs.
Went into septic shock, just out of hospital Monday, Felt better today so I tackled 2 laptops waiting from before I went in.
Neither guy would not go for Linux, as he insisted on Windows I did this cheap Acer with my Rufus Win11. OMG ungodly slow, my old Pi4 runs Win`11 faster.
The other one I managed to boost to 8GB and an SSD, it’s ‘acceptable’
Wow! Glad you’re feeling better, herbie! I bought this GWG-B1000 Mudmaster directly from Japan. Casio Canada was sold out and Amazon wanted to charge me $200 more for the unit. Even after paying the import duty I saved $200. It’s a nice unit. Pairs with my iPhone.
Wow! Fun day, upgraded the PHP on my server and broke some of the Wordpress sites, And it was Woedpress telling on all those sites the PHP upgrade was recommended.
Couldn’t debug it fat enough and took half the day to revert to PHP 7.4
I was hoping that qas the cause of some plugins that worked on one site but not another on the dame server.
Getting SO annoyed with MSoft.
Had a hotmail account since the days of dialup and seldom use it, but if I do they’ve changed shit and I get bombarded with ads. They want a security code, sent to an alternate email that seldom arrives, etc etc
Win 11 ads in the start menu, in notifications, if you scroll too far left….bah!
Gotta uaw the Mac and the Pi for personal, but I’m always on the PC for work stuff
Roger that! I’m completely M$ free in my house. I run Linux only and the wife has her Macbook Air which she loves. Any new computers that I buy will be Mac units or used Win 11 units that’ll run Linux.
Mine was 100% computer illiterate when we met and used a Mac mini for 15 years, I wouldn’t have had time to repair anyone elses PC in all that time had I given her A Windows box.
Opposite now, by the time I’m done with PCs I’m sick of looking at computers/Internet and just wanna watch YV and ear Cheezies with my dog.
Pulled a DUHHH
set up a webserver forgetting I sudp su’d.
Now i can’t see the /www directory or chown www-data. it’s owned by root.
Getting old sucks. Wiped out on the ice walking the dog last week and cracked some ribs.
Confined to the chair barely able to reach for the mouse…. ok now.
It’s been so long since I hand bombed web code spent a lot of time looking things I used to know up online. Jeez thst Google AI is next to useless!
Spent days with a menu code from CSS schools relearning what each thing did and customizing it to fit my needs. Beats falling on my face all to hell. Brutus the dog’s a little pissed as it’s been hovering round 0 out there, water on top of ice, and he hasn’t been walked for days.
Just found The World’s Shittiest Laptop. A lady brought me her brand new laptop to me as she said she must have messed up doing setup. Told her I’d set her up with local account with best privacy.
Did a system reset -it didn’t ask for a password. Got to where you hit SHFT-F10 and no command prompt. Opened Taskman, cmd.exe w admin privs won’t run, it’s in Smode.
I looked it up an Aspire Lite AL15-32P and it’s $299 at Bestbuy. Who’d buy such a POS? This is a little kid computer!
Went into BIOS to boot from my Rufus stick. Can’t disable secure boot or change boot order. F12 and select USB boot give security violation.
Recommending she return it an go Full Karen at the store, attract as nycg customer attention as possible for not informing her this was a toy an not a laptop for adults.
Set up a Linux/OpenBSD dual boot on one of my older boxes. I like the old boot loader LILO on Slackware; it’s easy to edit lilo.conf to enable the OpenBSD partition. No real reason to set-up the dual boot other than to do something and have fun. Getting bored in my old age. ![]()
So I hope she like Mint! That POS will not run proper Windows but the Cinnamon edition works perfectly. Better than brand new
Can you even get ISOs of the S edition?
Well the lady’s skeptical but she’ll try it. She’s f_cked anyway because she ‘thinks’ she may have written down he gmail and Facebook passwords somewhere……
But did another one today, older desktop i5 w 8GB runs enough to run Mint Cinnamon. Faster than it ran Windows 10.
Too bad SSDs are so pricey these days. I took a 240 SSD out of a refurbed laptop I did a while ago, I can get more for it than for the whole laptop. Gonna donate that with a 1000GB spinner to the Men’s Shed.
Oh goodie I just inherited a 512 30mm NVME and an 8GB DDR4 from a blown laptop. She was so happy to get her pics and files off it she even tossed in a new charger still in the box.
And paid for the file recovery too!
Mac NEO $789 at Costco….
