Tales from a tech

I did some digging online and figured it out. The MATE desktop by default does not come with gnome-disk-utility. After installing that and fiddling with settings DVDs automount.

DVD? CD? wot’s them?
Had a Dell 160 that I could only install Linux on by disk! Lucky I still have my USB DVD.

I will wait a while too. I kind of stuck with Debian based OSs the last decade or so. I would expect a Rasperry Trixie OS will be along soon.
I do enjoy KDE Plasma though, I’ve used Gnome for years and years.
I’ll try 13 on a VM one of these days.
Akk just popped into my head:

So after getting DVDs to properly automount I inserted a movie and tried watching it with VLC. VLC always works even with Debian. Not this time. My PC hard locked up after watching 5-10 seconds of the movie with a sound loop coming out. I had to shut off the PC with the power button. AAAARRRGGGHHH. lol. I gave up on Debian. Back with Slackware.

OMG send me a rotting salmon to slap people upsife the head with.
If’s a LONG WEEKEND! No matter how much you LIKE or how you SHOULDN’T HAVE TO Telus is not gonna send someone Right F*cking Now to fix your problem. SLAPP so STFU

So she calls in tears no Internet for almost 2 weeks, they keep telling her they fixed it remote and how much they’ll charge to send a tech. but won’t send one.
Said they installed security cameras and they worked for a week, so having been there like a month ago I bring along a spare ADSL modem.

To find they took her DSL modem away, installed a Smart Hub with the camera system and left, never telling the 80 yr old how to hook up to it from her laptop.
No wirelss signal there to connect to. No lights on indoor hub. No connection plugging into hub’s router,
Find no lights on outdoor antenna. They have dollar store 6 plugs into 1 power outlet when removed lights up outdoors.
OK but no wireless ID to connect to. No connection with network cable, dead hub.

She was on the phone with Telus techs from Noon to 3:30 as they passed her from dept to dept, handing me the phone to tell them f*ck off with the remote reset bullshit, make the lady a service call or send her a new hub and I’d set it up. Nothing more I could do.
I wonder WHY did they change her connection at all from DSL to cellular, where she lives is known for spotty cell service. And bad power, probably surged, blew the power slot on the adapter and fried the hub.
Note also the lady has the cheapest Acer laptop money could buy (win7 sticker) one of those ball mice that were all the rage in 1998 and totally dead battery, And of course WINDOZE that could not see my iPhone HotSpot or her iPhone hotspot right there beside it.

The salmon was for use on her as I heard how it USED TO work, how someone came in the yard after the camera stopped, how many times she called telus and the details of each call. how they wanted me to email them pictures of the setup etc etc etc like fifteen times.
Yah know one of the I will not shut up and listen people. Just like 4 of 5 Telus techs I talked to.

We got our Men’s Shed location, it’s in the main Mall here. Landlord so desperate for a tenant he gave us one hell of a deal.
Now I don’t look forward to making 30 retired old men comprehend that we don’t own our own building so it can’t be a messy shit shack like other one’s they’ve seen. It’s in a Mall and we’d be booted if it isn’t “pretty”. I’m drafting an old friend who decorated my last store to give advice as we’re useless men with zero taste in such things. People walking by have to look in the window and see something worth checking out, not a disorganized pile of junk in a heap.
If you’ve ever had a commercial lease, that is specifically spelled right out in all of them.

Holy Shit!
Setting up 5 computers for a local society that just bought them. Doing setups at home as they don’t take possession of their office until Oct. 1st.
They’ve got Win11 v 22H2 on them! 25H2 will be out in a month! Glad I have a month, that’s how long 5 systems will take to update.
Should’ve just booted from my Rufus stick and wiped the damn things.

Get one set computer up perfectly, then use Macrium free on an external drive to clone them.

Did that on a sale of 36 units for a school once. Then just booted and punched in the Windows key from the sticker. The OLD days…
Had an Acronis that came with the SSD I got for my 1st Macbook.

Client keeps calling wanting more stuff installed…. just sent a list of keys for Office 365. MUST pay for Office cuz you MUST use Outlook, you MUST buy an Antivirus or you won’t piss away ALL your grant money.
Even if you can’t read the ads and buy 5 licenses because each is valid for multple computers….

Useless HP printers! Software can’t even find itself.
Trying to set scanner ip on HP130, “HP” scan can’t even find itself yet I can ping it and call up the web interface in a browser.
Using the web interface, I can’t scan to a network folder on either Shared folder on the PC nor my TRUENAS box. But I use them all the time from iPhone, iPad, RaspPi, laptops, desktops.
Scan to email fails too.
No error number, just ‘failed try again.

no wonder people hate printers.

Can’t get over ppl who don’t know and insist on doing things. I mentioned the one buying enough Malwarebytes licenses for 15 computers when they had four, they also bought four Office 365 licenses when one will do five computers. They fired their webguy without knowing he put the domain in his name, won’t talk to them anymore and they can’t transfer it.
I can understand how groups MUST spend every penny of grant money, that’s ingrained.

Then I discovered a group held an impromptu meet where they okayed an advertising sign with only a rough sample and not a proof. It had a generic logo for the main Cdn org, and not theirs! No one mentioned the meeting to me, but my friend is in charge of making it and he brought it to me out of concern.
OMG I tried to explain I’d altered it as the sample had only the shape of one part of the logo the signmaker was asked to reshape and not the whole logo and there was just a blue squiggle. Said they should’ve asked a member with familiarity in design and advertising before approving and they all went beserk insisting I was calling them stupid to their faces!
Thank God I had years of managing workers and settled them down that I wasn’t calling them fools, I was just pointing out a detail that any person or group could’ve missed. Pointed to one of them and said if you’re thinking of construction include him he’s 25 years head of a construction business. That changed the tune and the tone fast.

OMG the other ppl just called and realizing the amount of hassle etc, just told me to keep all the old computers and do what I will, to hell with the old guy we fired get us a new domain w similar name and emails and host and manage it for us on a separate yearly invoice than your original quote. Bonus!

Well they now have at least a landing page with their name, an email for info and a webmail link plus 7 emails for the departments rather than an ‘site payment overdue’ notice.
All by dinnertime yesterday.

Finally finished getting ready to upgrade my work desktop to Win 11. Had to explore my BIOS, clone then convert main drive to GPT and reset the BIOS to UEFI boot.
Discovered why a customer’s machine was not able to find Windows Boot Manager in his BIOS last month - his main disk was MBR. His main SSD had only Megs of empty space and was a mess anyway and he’d bought a 2TB SSD to replace it so a fressh install made more sense.

Damn gamers that install them all to their C: drive anyways!

Can’t find any legit online Windows license sellers anymore. Considered upgrading to Pro but never really needed it to do anything.
And my new Raspberry Pi 500+ is on the way! Held off until the 500 had a usable NVME slot. The 500+ comes with a 256GB SSD and 16BG of RAM and a much better keyboard. $350
Hemmed and hawwed then thought of oaying $699 for a C64 and $349 for 180KB floppy back in the 1980s. 1/4 million times the RAM, 1.3 million times the storage, one third the dollars.

Thanks to the lady that was FORCED to buy a new computer to have Windows 11. Gave me her old one to ‘recycle’ and I promised to wipe the drive.
Wiped it good. Wiped it REAL good.
Then I upgraded the RAM in her 2016 all in one from the parts bin, added an SSD and installed Windows 11. Runs better than decent. Could flog it for $200-250 but I’m donating it to the Men’s Shed for their office computer.

Such a shame people are being forced to buy new computers. You know, you HAVE TO use Win 11, nothing else works. Jesus used Windows 11. And Dell computers, only those are blessed by God Himself. Only extreme leftist econazi black hat terrorist hackers use other than Windows on a Dell.

Speaking of which: Trixie based Pi OS was released a couple days ago.

HAHAHAHAHA! The Lord savior used Win 11. I must be a l337 haxxor cuz I likes da linux and macOS. Funny stuff man. I don’t miss the headaches of Windoze.

Been pushing Linux for decades in my town and over the decades encountered TWO people who love it and enough Mac users to need toes to count on.
95% of the guys at the mills that wouldn’t listen to the foreman on safety or work issues need to have a Dell w Windows just like him. And the churchgoers are even worse! Same thing without a clue how to use Windows folders. 22,000 links to Bible quotes all over the desktop. And they ALL surf the Net with “Google”.

Just drove all the way to Prince George UPS and back to pick up my Pi 500+
I didn’t order a power supply cuz I have 3 Amazon Chinese 25W ones left. Guess what, that’s almost 3A at 9V and 3A at 5V and it needs 5V 5A…. video shuts off after 2 mins.
And the Cdn supplier only ships UPS during the strike, so I guess it sits in the box until the strike is over.

Guess I play with the Pi 4 for a while, new Trixie based OS and KDE 6 Plasma desktop on it.

Got to witness another example of the complete lack of business sense while I was there.
The woman was obvious of her poor English, but FFS speak loud enough so guys like me who grew up around accents have a chance to TRY and figure it out.
She used her computer and printed the order, handed it to the guy in the back who came back with the package. Then she pulled a puny little phone and dug through it for an app, peered at my drivers licence and one finger typed my full name, complete address and took like 20 mins to get it right. There was a 28” screen and full size keyboard open to UPS’s site right in front of her.
I bet her wages for the pick up transaction time were more than the shipper paid UPS.

Workers won’t work. Managers won’t manage, Supervisors won’t supervise. And people think changing politicians will fix things. Abandon all hope for humankind.

FINALLY got my Pi500+ up and running. Turned out my 27W USB adapters U had maxed out at 3 amps and at 5V the screen would die after about 1 minute, Had to order a proper PS and make a trip to Vanderhoof to pick that up.
It’s a small all-in-keyboard machine, RGB show when turned on, 16GB RAM and internal 256 NVME,
Plug in a netwiork cord, turn it on and it downloads the OS. Which because the screen blanked out the first time I didn’t see it chose an older version. A bit of research and I found out hold SHFT on bootup and Pi Imager comes up and you can install your choice of OS on the default boot device. Hold the spacebar on boot to choose boot device. NVME, USB ot SD (which is now over twice the speed of the Pi 4’s SD)

So now running 64 bit Raspberry Trixie w KDE 6 for this post

OMG if these guys made a full size plain keyboard I’d buy one for my PC and Mac. Big improvement in action over my $100+ Logitech.
Unfortunately the errors continue as I adjust to yet another size & key spacing.

Oh boy! Filled her Google drive up. Bought more storage. Filled that up. All photos….
Google lets you download the pics you click in a zip file. If you want to download them all, it archives them in a max 4GB zip and emails you a link to download that.
Of course, she put only her gmail addy in her profile, and can’t access it as it’s full…..

She has 64GB of pics on her laptop and God knows how many on her iPhone. Now wonder her cloud storage is full.
A world of fun where 7.5 out of 8 billion people have no clue and no interest in how things work, eh?
