Shopping in town Why?

Maybe because many of us are stuck here simply for the jobs with benefits… To support our children in all Rupert is a crap hole that offers little respect to the locals and has no potential for anyone… its just false hope most people living a lie here

well then if you can not take what people have to say then why you even taking the time to read it

Speak for yourself.  Many of us count our blessings; we do not have a completely negative view of things.

There is no perfect place-the last two places I’ve lived combine the best parts of scenic with laid back lifestyle and sure enough, people found stuff to complain about! I think it’s human nature…people here on the Island seem to whine a lot about the weather, when compared to prairie cold or Rupert rain, it’s nothing.  :unamused:

I think Rupert gets a lot more flack than some places because it’s at the end of the road, so to speak. I’ve known people who have moved away and truly longed to get back, others who enjoyed their time there (like my 20 years) but prefer someplace with different opportunities and then there are those who chafe at the life there and honestly do feel trapped. And you know what? Everyone of those groups will find something good to say about Rupert, just like they will have something to complain about as well. It’s the ones who feel trapped that seem to be the loudest, that’s all. I would not trade the time I spent up there for anything but I also can see why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea either…

Well-said, Saffron.  The way that people feel about their present situation is something that they have control over.  This thread reminds me of a classic Milton quote:

  John Milton

Life is a Journey, not a Destination.
My 5 years in Prince Rupert were amongst the best of my life.  Fishing, Friends, Fresh Air, Nature, Waterfront, Safety, Smiling Folks etc.
Now Live in North Vancouver.  Everything is at my fingertips.  Just awesome shopping and facilities, at really cheap prices.  Largest Canadian Tire, and Save-On I have ever seen within a 20 min bus ride.  Sea Bus to Vancouver 10 minutes walk away. Rent’s about twice what it would be in Rupert, but the cost of living (excluding seafood) half that of Rupert. ($2.50 for 100g Halibut???)
On the down side, you do not know your neighbour, and you deal with pollution and crowds.  People tend to be pushy and sometimes plain ugly.
Rupert shopping sucks, however there are countless offsetting factors…
Rupert is a place to find your inner peace…

Yes…I second those comments Saffron, thankyou for spelling it out so clearly.

I love it here.  Sure, the shopping sucks, but consumerism isn’t everything!

I think I can handle it here 'cause I’m practically a vampire, I hate the sun.

I grew up very close to a big city, with all the shopping options you could ever want.  Believe me, there is more to life than being able to go to Wal Mart.  I think its much more in Rupert’s long term interest to support small business development in the retail and manufacturing sectors.

Wal Mart destroys communities.  What it does is suck up all the business out of the downtown core and help build urban sprawl while you pour your money into some fat American’s pocket.  I’ve seen this happen before, you think Rupert’s downtown is bad now wait til Wal Mart comes to town!  Then we’ll have 2 huge outfits extracting cash out of Rupert on an industrial scale…Think of it, with all the money you save at Wal Mart, you’ll be able to go to Chances more!

If you are one of those people who drives to Terrace to feed the Wal Mart, you are one of those savagely ignorant, beyond-worthless people who is happily helping to destroy the world, and modern civilization as we know it would be infinitely better off if your big SUV goes off the road enroute to said Wal Mart in Terrace, putting an end to your  economically vile and traitorous ways once and for all!

I really couldn’t give 2 flying craps about your “convenience” and “savings” in this context.  Think of the gas and wear and tear on the vehicle.  Think of how much you’re actually saving.  Think of how much other unnecessary stuff you are also going to buy there, because it looks like a good deal.  Consumers really need to start looking at the big picture, and realizing what the consequences of their collective actions are.  Democracy is a joke in this day and age, the dollar is becoming the only vote you have, unless you want to start shooting, and I doubt many Canadians are ready for that yet.  Wait till more of us are starving.

Seriously, this looks like such a little issue but its just a part of a much bigger and shadier picture.  Wal Mart sucks, and if you shop there you suck too.  There is no reason to shop at Wal Mart.   That’s just how it is.

If you have a problem with local customer service, why not talk to the manager about it, which might actually help elevate the level of customer service in the community?

I realize that Rupert does not have the best prices, that’s for sure.  That’s partly because of our struggling retail sector.  Everybody’s got to pay the bills, and as we all know, the bills in Rupert are very high…that highly efficient municipal administration doesn’t come cheap!  (see other, related threads…lol)

I don’t think Rupert is an “epic-fail” town at all…Rupertites just don’t stand up for themselves, they let whoever wants to come into town, rip them off, and laugh all the way to the bank.  That’s why there is a mall and a casino blocking the harbor view, and why a certain fish and signage tycoon (God damn his rotten soul to hell) has the rest of the waterfront lying fallow and surrounded by razor wire.

Plus the lack of sunlight and the economic hardships for regular people make it difficult to find the energy to get up and make connections and do things to make the community better.  You have to pay the bills, and when you’re done making some prick richer for the day you ain’t always got much energy left to help make your world better.

Sorry about the rant.  I like ranting.

Rupert is hella fine, and super hard-core, and Rupertites just need to stick together and keep fighting for what’s right…North Van sucks.  It’s just one big manicured, landscaped hill, with strip-mall outskirts.  Infested with yuppie hipsters who are afraid to look each other in the face.  It is, as Obi-wan Kenobi once described the spaceport of Mos Eisley, “A wretched hive of scum and villainy.”

I agree with Victor…the best thing about north Van is the proximity to Van and its seething cauldrons of vice, as well as the city’s excellent selection of ethnic foods, architecture and cultural attractions.  North Van has none of these, its just like an overflow suburb for the less interesting parts of Van.

PS, loved the Milton quote!  its definitely true, but Rupert has some inherent challenges as well, to maintaining the heaven part…Still, Rupert rocks, there are some great people here.

So in short and to save the diatribe for a more worthwhile time. Wal Mart bad? Rupert Good?

Not sure how a company that isn’t even in town, affects our current situation, other than those “savagely ignorant, beyond worthless people” that travel down the road to it.

i dunno but i wanna be a walmart greeter when i grow up

Nice.

Things aren’t that much cheaper in the big city.

And I agree that Wal-Mart is the great evil. Why do you think Vancouver has been denying Wal-Mart from building there? (Yes I know Vancouver finally has a wal-mart but not because Vancouver let them have it there).

Yeah, Wal-Mart sucks. Crappiest clothes, cheap goods (in a derogatory sense) and a general sense of desperation in the air. We already have that in Roop. It’s called Zellars.

Often I find that the goods I buy at Wal-Mart require me to return to Wal-Mart to buy it again a month later. It’s not much of an offer in the long scheme.

Does our downtown offer much? Well you have to have a market to offer much more and that means more people and jobs. So, you can’t take our hard economy out of the equation. But there is there a sense of rejuvenation – of new – downtown? No. All some of the shops would require is perhaps a new sign on the front and updated layout of their stores. Something that makes you feel special when you walk in. That doesn’t happen enough here.

Is that a outcome of our local economy? Only the shop owners in town could tell you that.

If there is something in Terrace that you want to buy you shouldn’t feel like a horrible person for doing so. It’s totally within your right. The drive from PR to Terrace in the summer is the best drive in the world. For a summer activity, it can’t be beat.

as you can read I didn’t say “Everyone” I said some of us… speaking for people I know that has stated the same thing I had  quoted… keep in mind “Everyone”  “Some people” are not speaking for a whole…

That’s right, you weren’t purporting to speak for everyone. And you don’t have a “completely” negative view of things either. You only take a negative view of some things, some of the time. I bet you count the odd blessing or two as well. You’re not a straw man. You have your own opinions.

Democracy is already irrelevant for most parts of the world in the 21st Century, unfortunately.

I always thought they’re confined in Vancouver’s Downtown, West End, and Kits.

Do you guys have Tru-Value Hardware?
It’s like the RadioShack for home appliances, if it even works out of the box you’re ahead of the game. The Boxing Day lineup is for returns, not big sales…
I wish we had a Zellers, they did carry the odd TALL size shirt and 40" jeans. Walmart only carries clothes for skinnies and a few sizes fit for Jabba the Hutt.

We’re new   And hopefully our beautiful new sign can go up tomorrow, that should rejuvenate our little corner of 2nd ave

Yes, you have a much prettier corner than what was there a few months ago that’s for sure!  Good job!
