It could be a number of things but I would bet it is likely node saturation. As more people in your neighbourhood are getting the faster internet you see a speed hit when neighbours use the Internet at the same time. You and X amount of neighbours share x amount of bandwidth on coaxial cable until it connects to a node (like a hub) then continues on hybrid fibre cable to the Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS), usually at the shop. Generally (loosely) the bandwidth limitation is the amount of households connected to each node. It looks like City West is using one bonded channel for upstream and one bonded channel for downstream. It is possible for these modem-CMTS systems to use multiple channels which could alleviate some of the neighbour sharing bandwidth problem but this might cut into some existing services. I would say splitting up / adding nodes would be their most likely solution. You can try asking City West how many households share the node you are connected to. If they admit it is on the high side might be worth a question asking them when they plan on adding another node. Don’t forget to pass the number to us.
You can also try logging into your cable modem at 192.168.100.1/RgSignal.asp and checking that the “Signal To Noise Ratio” (SNR) is above 30 dB and the “Power Level” should be between -15 dBmV to +15 dBmV. Numbers not in those ranges could mean poor connections, breaks in the line, etc; if you have a splitter inline somewhere try a different one, sometimes a cable extension which attaches two cables goes faulty or sometimes bad cable. If all else fails find the first place the cable comes into the house and splits or is extended and connect your cable modem there for the dB numbers. If the numbers are still bad tell City West about the bad numbers and what you did. They have access to these numbers from their CMTS but they might not always check. You can check the “Logs” link on your modem to see what error messages come up although many error logs are not the end of the world and configuration errors 17.x seem to be common.
I hope this is some help to you and wish you luck - keep us posted. I anticipate some bumps with this new internet as demand is probably very high and City West will be challenged to keep up. Lets hope for the best.

I am pleased with it, 15 meg. I came from the premium ADSL account and I immediately noticed web pages were snappier on the faster web sites. FTP type downloads are significantly faster. Netflix is better and increased in resolution with some content, from HD to X-HD. The difference is noticeable. 1080P streaming content from the internet is no longer a wait and play. I haven’t tested any low latency demanding games online yet but so far the ping numbers to some sites are quite reasonable. Still testing, but pleased so far.

happy so far just have the 10mb

One thing I noticed is if you physically connect your PC to the modem rather than wireless, you get the speed you paid for. If not, then I guess you’re not getting your money’s worth, especially when you’re paying subscription on top of municipal taxes.

*25MBps package

Gangnam Style!

Good point, I agree. My policy at home is if it has an ethernet socket it is hardwired to the network; wireless is for Ipods and Ipads.

I hear they are offering quantum over dsl as well? Is this true. Wonder what the speed would be like knowing that we get quite sh##ty speed over DSL anyway.

I was in the office last week and was told that indeed quantum is available through DSL… you are right re: speed but I refuse to give them anymore cash, although I am considering upgrading the internet and ditching cable …I am on the standard DSL and get about 1.76mbps average… If you up grade to DSL quantum keep us posted as to what you think…

I switched over from DSL to the Quantum 10 almost 4 weeks ago… and the speed has been a slight improvement.

LOL just noticed the Grade F… slower than 86% of Canada. That’s an IMPROVEMENT over my DSL!

One problem though… my iPhone will connect to my home wifi no problem, but switch back to 3G while I’m browsing, usually without me noticing. I have definitely been charged for using data while I should have been connected to my wifi.

You just got that speed with the 10 meg package damn. Getting a place on friday and they said we have to be on a waiting list for the Quantum internet. Might take around a month damn why the wait I wonder.

It depends on where you live. I was told that my area may be slow, as it’s far away from downtown. I am also not paying any more for this service than I was for my DSL Lite… and I didn’t need to get a new modem. If I was using my internet for anything other than browsing and the occasional download, I would be pissy about the speeds.

What the heck that speed is what standard DSL gives, it’s all i need for what i do, but Quantum should do better than that … Inquire you should not be paying for faster speed, cause you are not getting it.

Smartass said she isn’t paying more for the quantum. I’m really confused as they will give some people quantum without extra charges ? Some people will be charged extra ?

If you ask me this Quantum internet is pretty bad if there is over a month waiting list already, or maybe that is a good thing why there is a waiting list, some people are getting 2 meg speeds for 10 meg service.

Practically everyone is told from City West that living out of downtown makes it slow.

and that’s on quantum 15…

That is so gross to see those speeds. I would take a few screen shots daily and show those criminals @ City West.
