Pay before you discharge

I understand how some people are going to be very annoyed with all of this, but in the end it makes things a lot better for everyone. There are often ways around having to actually enter the store unless you are paying cash, the machines outside are easy to use (even if you have to punch in a code for a company card) it’s still very possible to pump outside.

for some reason a lot of people in rupert think if you pay outside with a card and select more $ than you put into your vehicle you will actually be charged for it, people give your head a shake! if you dont know how much your vehicle will take to ‘fill it up’  select the highest amount and go from there.

4,000,000 BC’rs will be a little inconvenienced.
let’s say a conservative 10% will get shortchanged on transactions.
Then another kid will die because his boss said if he got robbed it came out of his paycheque.
Everyone will pass another law *that doesn’t address the problem, and inconveniences 4,000,000 people just a little more * and we go on to the next thing.

Typical stupid law to add to the list, that doesn’t address the problem but pretends to and allows some shallow thinkers to pat themselves on the back.
Watch for the next one when handguns are banned outright.

I like the idea of the pay at the pump law.  It’s going to help me resist the impulse buying of junk food while waiting in line to pay for my gas.  Who knows, maybe the retailers will find their revenue decreasing because other people stop buying so much extra crap too.

We have the same card. Since no one in town accepts the PHH card at the pump we asked the Chevron guy in Rupert about it since that’s where we usually fill up. He said he was planning to inform his staff that if they saw a government/police/marked vehicle pull up to turn on the pumps manually from inside. Who knows if he’s able to or will do it, but I guess we’ll see pretty quick.

CrazyMike - the PHH card is not accepted at any pump in the province - that’s a PHH rule and they would have to change their rules.

PrincessofPower - maybe you can explain to me just how this will help save a teenager’s life.  The real problem is with employers violating the law by trying to get employees to cover cash shortages and by not implementing adequate working alone procedures.  The WCB rules in those areas are also being strengthened on Feb 1st.  Let’s see if those rules are actually enforced.

It was already illegal for employers to tell kids that the money from drive aways was going to come off of their cheques.  Obviously, that law didn’t work.  This one will.  So there you go.

so what happens when i pay for 80.00 of gas but only need 69.00 i get rebate? i get money back.

Of course you’d get your money back.  Funny thing for me, is that I really prefer pay at the pump with my two little girls in the vehicle.  I will actually go out of my way to find a full serve or a pay at the pump so that I don’t have to leave my kids alone in the van while I pay.

oh yeah, and I can only guess, but I bet that the stations that don’t have pay at the pump could probably do a “pre-authorization” on your credit card like they do in restaurants.  So you’d go in, give them your credit card, they’d ring it through, then you’d go pump until your tank is full, then you’d come back and they’d finish the transaction.  It’s quite simple once you get used to it.  I did it all the time in restaurants I worked in.

of course you’d get your money back… why is it people dont understand that? this isn’t enforced to rip you off.

I applied online for a Petro commercial card-lock card back in April. On long road trips I found it difficult finding diesel in small town at 3am sometimes. I got hooked on it when I worked in Grande Prairie during the summer–it’s super quick ripping into a commercial fueling station, swipe your card, fuel up, and leave.

It sounds just like Pay at the Pump, but it works super smooth. It’s a credit card essentially, so it doesn’t leaving you waiting for authorization, or punching in dollar values for fuel. Much faster, and with a dozen pumps open all big enough to fit a semi-truck in there, I never had to wait in line.

Just wish we had a Petro Can card-lock here in town so I could start using it again.

The charge only goes through for the amount you put in your tank. Found this out at a closed gas station late at night, almost outta fuel near Hope. I selected some dollar value, went to pump the fuel and $0.03 of gas came out, which I was charged for on the receipt. Their Pay at the Pump was still running, but the fuel supply pump was shut off. And this is why I got a card lock.

There is   In the Industrial Park across from the recycle centre

My Petro card only works at Petro stations. That station is run by Northwest Fuels, unfortunately.

Northwest Fuels owns the Marina gas dock, isn’t there a cardlock in the industrial site? although I’ve heard a lot of people complaining about it.

As for the need for paying at the pump being a pain, it doesn’t need to be.  Over here, pretty much all gas stations have a system where you use a touch screen to select the type of gas you want, how much you want–in yen, litres, or just a “full tank”–and then put the money in and pump.  When you’re done, either the machine spits out your change or you bring your receipt to a separate machine, scan the bar code on the receipt and it gives you your change.    Is there any reason they couldn’t do the same thing there?

Chevron allows you to use your Interac at the pump. I can’t imagine that would stop under the new law.

In spite of my trashing a stupid law, that’s actually how I’ve been doing at at Chevron for the last decade or so. I get my gas receipt in my hand right away with no trainee errors. And don’t have to walk over to the office at -36 degrees…

I use my Visa card at Chevron.  Quick and easy to pay at the pump.

I use “pay at the pump” all the time.

However, I agree that “reactionary”  (or perhaps in this case “over-reactionary”) legislation makes baby Tom Cruise cry.
