Living in PR - from residents only please!

Munkman,

Your assumptions are, for the most part, accurate. You said you’re thinking about moving here due to “opportunity”. You also said you moved to PG about a year ago and love it. I don’t know where you moved to PG from, but I will say PG and Rupert are night and day. If you have an opportunity to benefit your career path here in Rupert, than I echo others and say come see the place for yourself. Come look around and ask yourself, could I live here? Is the opportunity worth it if you live somewhere you don’t care for? In my case, I moved here in my teens and stayed about 10 years. Left for personal reasons thinking I would never return here. 5 years later I returned here, again for personal reasons. I don’t love it here, but it’s home in way that nowhere else is. It is only an 1 1/2 away from the next town over, but it’s an isolated stretch. Beautiful, but isolated. Come and see.

Why?

Everytime he uses the acronym “LMD”, I think of “Loud Mouth D**che”.[/quote]

Personally i prefer my food to be prepared and stored in a clean environment with proper sanitation procedures. Stardust has always been a disgusting hole in the wall place and their health and safety records prove it. repeat offenses for cleaning sanitation storage and food safety procedures. No thanks.

If you want to continue discussing the dining options in rupert maybe start a new thread.

But its our living hell…LOL. Not so bad, and it makes us appreciate the sunshine even more. We probably have more overcast/cloudy days than the rainy days. Can you imagine other places with this much rain and wind in one day, it would be top story on the news.

For sure … its the restaurant concerns that make me laugh … I agree that fine dining in the big city is over rated just the price is higher there isnt anything wrong with our restaurants … I also have eaten for years at Stardust and am still around to talk about lol

I’m wondering that myself. I have no idea.

Well is it accurate if only the pro crowd are allowed to comment? If I was moving there and asking the questions I would want to hear from as many people as possible. Seems disingenuous to suggest there is no down side.

Yes the rain does suck , the downtown looks like a mini Detroit , the city council do not give a shit . The downtown is mostly closed stores and the buildings seem to be falling apart one way or the other and many of the merchants seem to not give a shit when a customer comes in . I have even noticed how some of the new staff at Tim’s , no longer smile and a few are already very rude when they serve you but I must say some of the regulars are still very friendly , just hoping the management steps up on the ones with attitude . The mayor has done sweet nothing for the city or the community but then again he never did much when he worked for The Late Great Peter Lester . I would like to see three quarters of council thrown out on their asses . The big picture does not look good for now or in the coming years . BOOM ?

thanks Justin it’s great to add balance to all of this… I do have a love for many aspects of this community but I agree with much of your points I do think this town is turning around it’s just that the people currently unemployed for the most part won’t see much change. Much of the new jobs will be taken by folks from out of town. I know a few young people that can/want to learn new skills that are working right now doing renos but many unemployed are on permanent welfare here. I do agree that down town is a dump and that council does nothing for the community … I do enjoy the beauty surrounding us and am glad to have a decent paying job, and thanks again for adding balance to this thread…

I agree balance is good. But when someone who is thinking about moving to our town see posts like some of these on here, WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYONE WANT TO!!! Some are very pessimistic about the future and that’s fine. Change is coming, how big or how little we don’t know. But anything is something. CN would not be building a rail/road access way on Ridley for the amount of work that they have now. They are looking to the future.

James is right about many of the unemployed, but we can hope that there will be training for some if it comes to that.

Many of the unemployed that want to and I stress want to are doing it and/ are working… there is a huge population of long term unemployed that nothing will change but for some it’s a life choice, or age issue my experience looking for work elsewhere is age is a huge issue. Many also lack education. I do hope the spin off in the service industry employees some unable to get into the new jobs
I think people need balance the good the bad and the ugly and it’s no skin off my butt whether the person make the choice to move here or not. I am glad opportunities exist for people that choose to come …
strongly agree that any change is good… the feeling of stagnation has ended here… I am glad people i know with homes that had dropped in value are seeing them raise.

I wasn’t questioning the balance of opinions or even the right to comment negatively. I just wondered WHY would you join a forum on something you don’t like? I mean other than to be a forum troll.

Surely you cant be referring to me?

I still think who ever moves here or is considering it needs to hear about the good, bad and the ugly and anyone with an internet connection/ access to one is welcome and free to state their views.

Whoever his moving here though needs to be here to see nights like tonight…

Well, I am not a resident anymore but I was for a time a few years ago. I find it interesting that a lot of people compare Prince Rupert to Vancouver when touting the benefits of small town life. That is ridiculous comparison. If you compare Prince Rupert to any other small town or small city in BC, Prince Rupert will fall short.
Sorry, but a lot of towns have friendly people, good restaurants, low house prices and no traffic. They also have access to amazing wildlife and beautiful scenery. It is BC after all…compare Prince Rupert to most of the small cities and towns in BC and it will fall short.
I can leave my house and ski in 15 minuets or I can go hiking, fishing or walking and enjoy it all in fine sunny weather. Even in winter. Most of the population of BC lives near the 49th parallel for a reason.
Don’t move to Prince Rupert unless you are willing to leave to chase the sun at least a few times a year.

Go to ANY liquor store or the casino on welfare Wednesday and then come back here and tell me Rupert has an unemployment problem…cause we DON’T…we have two types of population here…those that work and those that choose to not work and rape the system and have no respect for taxpayers. There are jobs to be had RIGHT NOW…go downtown and look at the help wanted signs all over the place.

I have seen many people move back to town over the last 5 years and every single one of them did not have one bit of trouble finding work, and decent paying work at that.

Now I know of course there are legitimate people who are unemployed and WANT to be working, my comments are about the majority, not the minority.

Hmm, Bthedog, you appear to be of same mind (or maybe are the same) as this fellow!

Perhaps generalizations of anyone don’t really explain the full story

Are you implying I am Todd Hamilton lol?

I don’t always agree with his editorials, but I certainly agree with the one about unemployment, 100%! He got a lot of flack from that editorial, but none of it was from me.

Call it a generalization, I don’t care…the fact is, it holds some truth…certainly a lot more than people are willing to openly admit.

Oddly enough…no.

Are you kidding me? I don’t know where you get that from, but I know the one guy who likes to make ridiculous comparisons for petty reasons is Jack Anderson.
