Athlete's World Closing Down?

This article is stating that the Forzani Group is shuttering several of its smaller branded stores, including Athlete’s World…I wonder if the Rupert location is history or what this means for the future of its presence.

Canadian Tire plans to roll out 100 new Sport Chek and Atmosphere locations in the next five years, increasing the amount of retail space in the company’s sports retailing division by half.

The iconic retailer acquired a slew of sports-themed retail chains when it took over Forzani Group in 2011. The company on Wednesday outlined its plans to streamline those holdings while adding two million square feet of new retail space.

At the core is a plan to turn the sports apparel chain Sport Chek into a super brand, while consolidating other lines around that chain. The outdoor living chain Atmosphere will also be a part of the expansion.

All in all, Canadian Tire is consolidating nine different retail brands — including Athletes World, Sports Experts, Econosports, Fitness Source and Sport Mart — into three remaining brands, centred on Sport Chek. The outdoor living chain Atmosphere will remain as will National Sports, an Ontario-based chain of 18 locations that has had success selling equipment for hockey and other team sports.

“We see a real opportunity in outdoor lifestyle within Atmosphere,” FGL Sports. Ltd. president Michael Medline said on a conference call, explaining the strategy to media and analysts who follow the company. “There’s a lot of different kinds of sports.”

Single sport stores such as Nevada Bob’s Golf and Hockey Experts will become concept stores within Sport Chek locations.

“Focusing on key banners was necessary for the long-term success of the company,” Medline said. “We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted to do back in January, but we took the extra time to do it right.”

In total, 115 sports retailing stores under various names will be shuttered, of which 20 will be converted into Sport Cheks immediately. But those closures will be offset over time by more than 100 new corporate store openings planned over the next five years.

“For all store closures, the company will undertake efforts to retain as many employees as possible through transfers to converted or new stores,” the company said.

The company didn’t provide details of where the store openings would come, but Medline hinted in his comments that Ontario would be a focus.

Per capita, the Greater Toronto Area only has 0.11 feet of Forzani-owned retail space. In the Calgary market, that number jumps to 0.24, “and Calgary is not retailed out,” Medline said.

The-pretax cost of the moves is expected to be around $26 million, he added.

smartass… Where are you?

Heard that the PR AW will be one of the ones closing down and being converted into a Sport Chek that will occupy the current AW spot in addition to the old San Francisco/Please Mum and Sports Locker corner of that side of the mall.

Heard this from some mall employees this weekend.

Anyone hear this rumour?

sounds like bthdog has become the new ajaye46! Keep up the good rumors, b!

^LOL give me a break!

Is this not a PR discussion board? I am just posting what I have heard around town.

At least he’s 100-200% more reliable, even without a crystal ball. lol

LOL!! Rupert rumours are HILARIOUS!!! Apparently I need to pay more attention to this site :-/

The Rupert Athletes World isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, nor is it being converted to a SportChek. The Terrace AW store isn’t being converted to a SportChek either… it is opening in a completely different spot in the Skeena Mall, along with Winners.

As for occupying the 4 store fronts between Athletes World and the Royal Bank… I WISH!! You must have been talking to the same mall employees who said Wal-Mart was taking over the whole top floor! LOL

What are they going to do with the AW in Terrace? They won’t have both an Aw and a SportChek.

She said AW is only going into a new location that is it. There will be no SportChek in the Terrace Mall

To clarify… I meant a SportChek will be beside Winners in the Skeena Mall… not Athletes World. Athletes World isn’t moving.

anything going where salty crab is?

Agreed.

SportChek is going in the Skeena Mall in the area that used to be Northern Drugs.

Does that mean the Skeena Mall will have both AW and SportChek? I can’t see that happening.

Thanks for clearing up the rumours Smartass.

As for AW…what do you have to say about the news article about the Forzani Group planning to shutter all of their smaller sports brand stores…clearly something is happening there.

I guess is was true all along when this thread got started.

Soon [soon]
adverb, soon·er, soon·est.

  1. within a short period after this or that time, event, etc.: We shall know soon after he calls.
  2. before long; in the near future; at an early date: Let’s leave soon.
  3. promptly or quickly: He came as soon as he could.
  4. readily or willingly: I would as soon walk as ride.
  5. early in a period of time; before the time specified is much advanced: soon at night; soon in the evening.

In my world… next week is soon. 5 minutes is soon - not 9 months away!

We were told about the closures in May that affects each and every Athletes World in Canada. It has nothing to do with Rupert… our Rupert store does AMAZING!!

We were also reminded that 9 months was a long ways away and that we weren’t to speak of the closures with media of any form - websites, word of mouth, or the like. Sorry, but I like my job, and even though my position may be changing soon, I wasn’t about to blab all over the place about the store’s impending doom.

As it stands now, we are open until the end of January 2013… and if certain factors play along, possibly until the end of March.

We were in Terrace yesterday, first time since August and was quite impressed with the ongoing renovations at Skeena Mall. The Sportchek store is incredible and the new Dollarama is huge. They have spruced up the Mall itself, new lighting, couches for people to sit and enjoy a coffee. Great job! Liquidation World is great too, found some awesome deals there. As nice as it would be, I really can’t imagine Sportchek opening another location within such a close distance. They seem to be doing well and those that said Terrace residents were visiting Rupert to shop at Dollarama, ooops, their store will be awesome too! Winners will soon be locating there and there were quite a number of Rupertites in Terrace yesterday, M&M Meats, Total Pet, huge Marks etc., all shopping up a storm! I am sorry for the employees of Athletes’ World, they are a good crew and wish them well in the future.
