Whoops I F*****d up

Put my X2 4200 RAID box together today, and of course it bluescreened on boot. So I did the Windows repair and… I forgot to use getkey.
No problem, I’ll use a legit XP Pro, they sold last one this morning! Too late to reorder, I will have to wait til Monday, and probably get it Weds.
Wait! The VLK hack!
All copies of it suddenly boot on every machine with a read error.

So I guess tomorrow I’ll try an older hack, one pre SP2 because all my work files are on the drive. Probably better to do a fresh install, reinstall all my programs and just copy the needed files off the old HD. Then I can legitamize by doing a Windows repair when the sotck comes in.
Any alternate suggestions? I had hoped to use the repair function to boot, install all the new drivers and then diskcopy to the new RAID.

Whynot make a boot floppy and then put the I386 files onto a cd then copy them to a dir on the hard drive then run winnt

It’ll still go into the install mode an ask for the license #.

and do you need one ?

Ya my keygen won’t spit one out for newer CDs w SP2. Annoyed cuz the X2 parts sat almost 2 weeks before I got time to assemble it, now it could be a few more days. Really got pissed when I reordered stuff today and the chip dropped $62 since I ordered it.

Prices drop all the time… I think of it this way… spend as much as you can afford wait another week when you have it all saved up then buy it… Don’t wait and don’t cheap out  Buy the best ya can… THEN be happy with it LOL…

I can’t really complain… quoted a buyer on a 4400 chip and they already dropped off the P.O., it dropped over $70.00 8)

I was thinking about building a intell 755 DC system.

Right now i have my apple 12" pb. and a free intel P4 2.6 with 512mb ram 80gig hdd and 2 brand new ( cheap 50$ ) samsung SyncMaster 753df’s from my gf;s work  mint condition work really well… I love dual monitors so much work can be done and it’s just better…

linux linux rah rah rah
windows windows ewww puke hah
ewwww I Hate I Windows!

So I relegated setting up the X2 to my techie. I do NOT want to learn all the intracies of setting up a RAID 0 mirror in XP. Bill G just wasted another 12 hours of my life.

Fedora install:
COOL! you have RAID setup in BIOS. You also have an IDE I assume you’re going to use for backup.

x change it
x use it |
|>>> let’s go.

XP install:
OMG! WTF is this??? Write boot sector to video card failure!
x Is this even a PC
x Other |
|>>>> there are no drivers on the 8" 160kb DOS floppy that I didn’t even look at anyway in an attempt to make it appear it’s your fault

That’s from doing the install with an IDE slave HD full of data. Wrote the boot info to that, installed XP onto one SATA drive left the other unpartioned.
Also assigned D: E: F: to the floppy combo, gave H: to the SATA and you can’t reassign it management.

I gather I was s’posed unplug the floppy’s USB, the IDE drive, F6 to load the raid & sata drives, install XP, enable the RAID in BIOS, reboot praying it would setup without screwing the existing installation, plug in the IDe drive, reboot, plug in the USB for the combo, reboot.
Or something equally as mickey-mouse.

Did you end up getting xp installed ?

What i have done in the past is to copy the raid drivers off the manufacture’s disk to a floppy when it says press F6 to install raid drivers / ide drivers you do to then point to the 1.44floppy crap diskett :frowning:

j’

New board had 4 SATA slots, I had to turn off RAID function in the 2 unused. Then XP would F6 to load the drivers, and everything worked ok. Also remembered to unplug IDE drives and USB drives.
So it’s all back, except for the software CDs that went astray.
