Socialist? What a loaded word.
Some would say yes, though.

Is this conflict a specific event during the war in Bosnia?
No.
The fact that few people know about this event is another hint
While it is well known in Europe, it is not so well known here, for political reasons. How’s that for a hint?

But I’m not in Europe! From you hint, it looks like the event you are referring to is a mistake by NATO forces during military operations. I remember the convoy bombing in Kosovo. But it wasn’t the largest “something” since the Korean war. So I’m stuck. I looked at Terraserver’s pictures and couldn’t identify the area in Kosovo or Montenegro.
So my question is: Is it related to the wars in Kosovo and Montenegro?
I would stake my mother in law’s life that it’s Croatia, the breakaway region Krajina, the northeastern part near Zagrab - Bjelovar - Koprivnica where the Serbs had to be driven out…
I can’t name a specific event cuz the maps aren’t too good. about 45.14N 16.03E.
Or is she dead??
I was born in Zagreb, Croatia! Just thought I would mention that, he he. Beautiful area, unfortunately some places were completely destoyed by the warfare. It was not fun.
Wait…yes…yes, I think I do…that damn thing hangs around my backyard all the time!
But you are Canadian. Hint…
No.
Right. Now put all the hints together, especially the hints about not hearing about it in Canada… The hint about it being the biggest ______ since Korea, etc.

A Balkan hell hole. Unreported. It would be two years before the Canadian media picked up the story and explained that this was the biggest battle Canadians had been involved in since the Korean War.
How about Medak, Croatia?
Site of Canada’s largets military action since the Korean war?

Edit: Nevermind, looks like CC Dynamo beat me to it
Right on, you got it.
The Medak Pocket was a victory for Canadian peacekeepers, mainly Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (and about half of them reservists), who held off a much larger Croatian force and eventually forced a Croatian withdrawal.
While reported all over Europe (and celebrated as a UN victory), it was purposely buried by the Canadian government, who didn’t want Canadians hearing about its peacekeepers killing Croatians. This was immediately after the Somalia Affair as well, so it was decided not to mention it at all.

You learn something new everyday. I knew it was in former Yugoslavia as soon as you answered the language thing. But the hush hush around the operation was so good that I had never heard of it.
Good one.
Now Dynamo, it’s your turn to find a picture and post it for the game. Welcome to htmf.
Two years for the media to bury it and ten years to show on Google! Do you you know how many pages I scoured trying to get maps with names of villages around there trying to remember?
And the whole damn country is so tiny, but the latest lesson of how thin the veneer of civilization still is began there.
Gooby: that’s Maxi cat, from a studio and artists near Zagreb. He was a favorite back when I was an animation student and Yugoslavia was a shining success compared to other commie bungholes.
I asked my dad if he remembers the cat, and he does. I was only thirteen when we moved here, and my dad says I was Canadianized, lol. Yeah, it’s a very small country, about 5 mil. population. Whenever I tell someone I am from there, half the people guess either Asia or Africa…hmm. Good job on choosing the location MiG, I am impressed.
