I remember a long time ago ( about 20 years) a regular Dodge car tested in Quebec fitted with in-wheel motors. The prototype was demonstrated on a Science show. Acceleration was on par or better than with the regular engine. Breaking was crisp and worked by reversing the wheel which would also be used to charge the battery. Autonomy was the same as a regular gas tank. The project was promising but something happened and it fell through. I think Mistsubishi got involved in the technology. In my opinion, the gas lobby was so strong to hamper the research. Some sites:

How this for bugging you when you’re driving? There’s a cop at the front of the line, he goes 80kmh whenever you can’t pass and speeds up to 100kmh whenever you pass, so no matter what you do you’d get a ticket. He does this all the way to the next town, 65 kms.
