Thinking about getting a Macbook Air

My wife needs a new laptop. I’m thinking about getting a Macbook Air. If I buy from Apple Canada will tariffs be applied? I googled this and it’s unclear.

No, they’re not coming from the Excited States of America. So no tariffs.

I just bought a new Mac mini last week and it was cheap.

Let me know if you’re ready to buy it, I can send you a link for education pricing.

Cool! Yeah the new Macbook Air with the M4 chip looks amazing! I’ll be buying the laptop when we’re heading back from PG on the 19th. Visiting my kid. Many thanks for that, MiG! Yes, that education link will be great!

My daughter just told me not to be an old poop and simply save money to pass on to her and go out and buy myself something I want instead of need. She suggested a 3D printer.
I’ve been growing more & more pissed with my Win11 laptop that’s going on in years and looking at a Macbook as a replacement. The PC laptops I’ve owned were one hell of a downgrade after my 2008 Macbook, sorry attempts at trackpads, constant updates and Win7,8,8.1, 10 & 11 all being so radically different from each other.

I certainly don’t miss Windows. What a dumpster fire! I’m looking forward to setting up the new Macbook after my return from PG.

Looking at the 15" Pro, same price & specs as the AIr - 1699
Like a larger screen and even using my mini, the Mac display is WAY more readable and sharper then my PC.
Then - WTF? - the site changed and all I can find is 14 or 16" Pros! for way way more!

Is it because of tariffs? Do you want the secret special education link.

Sure, thank you.
I saw a YouTube today about the Air, the guy mentioned the same hard drive issue as when I bought my mini - the 256 is a single drive, much slower than the 512+ with two chips. That’s why I grabbed it when I saw a 512 on sale for the price of a 256.
14" Pro has 512, XDR display, 2 more ports, SD slot, headphone jack, 70W charger vs 35 for $400 over the 15" Air - looks interesting…

Ordered the 15 inch Macbook air today.

P.S. I’m in PG one more day. Heading to Smithers tomorrow. Upgraded my 22 year old’s 16 inch Dell Windows 10 laptop to Ubuntu 24.04.2 yesterday.

Set-up my wife’s Macbook Air. She loves it. I love how when I click add printer that bounjour just sees the printer. Also bought a magic mouse. All very slick and top shelf.

Toured the computer stores in PG today. Best selection/prices were Costco. That 15" Air looked good & best value for the $$
Even the 13.6" looked real good (display) compared to my old Aluminum Gen 1 Macbook!
That Macbook Ait and a Kia Niro PHEV for 41K took all my will not to go bananas - then I remembered I’d just filled up @ 1.289 and a tank cost $40 less than last trip there…

Dev/wife really likes the 15 " macbook air. It’s really over kill for her needs. She watches her American Youtube news videos, types some documents, and checks her mail and imessages. It’s a beautiful unit with an amazing display.

The guy picked up his computer today and is sh*tting bricks over Windows 11… OMG I have to learn all this…
then he tells me is he also has an iMac and all he uses it for is to dictate speech into Word365 documents… it was too hard to learn how to use it.
Also saw the M4 Macmini in the flesh for the first time, holy smoke makes my M2 mini look huge.

Got a recycled Intel Macbook Air… it boots but I assume it got tossed because they lost the login and can’t get past it.
Has 2 USB C ports, a USB A, an SD slot an perhaps DP on the right side. Guess on the model?
Downloading Ventura pkg to make a USB installer drive with my Mini and we’ll see what happens!

I think it’s a 2015-16 model Quad core i5, 8Gigs and a 256.
The keyboard’s screwed, that’s why it wouldn’t take their password. Having no idea myself, I attached an external and tried a reset, no luck.
However after a failed Ubuntu install, it did enter Recovery Mode but failed at that too. Learned it did have Sierra.
Now it’s running Debian Bookworm with KDE Plasma. Just need to find the Broadcom 4360 wireless driver.
