I moved here in 1974 and met some awesome people. I stayed and worked in the cannery off and on for a couple years. This town was hoppin, and people were everywhere. I worked at the West End Grocery way back then, and the Surf Club was right next door. I would run over and pickup an order of King Crab legs and garlic butter …mmmmmmm… OMG…sooo good. After work around 11PM I’d stroll down to the Rupert Hotel ( the original) and catch up with freinds and party, eventually going down to the Ho Ho.
Remember the Pagoda, Royal, Savoy, Teriyaki Club…oh good times. Parties down on Water St. lol
Met some good people those days…
I’m still here after 35 years, and loving our small town very much.
My roomie in Burnaby used to work on the weather ship back then. Something like 7 weeks on then drove down for 7 weeks off in the Big Smoke. Told us many wild tales from back then.
Liked the one about the lady with a guy from each crew. Got to change her old man every 7 weeks…
He loved that job. 7 weeks at home and 14 weeks pay to blow.
Dinner at the Surf, dancing at TJ’s, partying afterwards in some east side dive…
Oh and the malls when they were actually BUSY!!
OMG TJ’s was my haunt … we need a place for the over 35 crowd to go out to dance to … pagoda buns @ 200 am, gettinghome in time to shower and go to work … its a wonder the liver survived but boy what a blast !
Did anyone ever party on Cotton Street? I’ve heard stories about that place.
Yup it was quite the place … we all had a moment of silence when the house got torn down last year … OMG if the walls could talk LOL!
I hear the stories of the party house in that other thread and I roll my eyes. It can’t be anything compared to cotton street. The police where AFRAID to break up a party there.
My dad was telling me that one of his cop buddies got thrown down the stairs one night when he went up there.
The prince rupert I grew up in is ten times more tame then it was back then. When you had a party, you HAD A PARTY. lol. And the current police force here thinks they have it rough… They have no idea… When main street was crowded on a saturday night, and the bars were packed…
I wish I grew up back then. Just so I could have seen prince rupert actually thriving.
I’m a relative newbie here, 10 years, so I can’t relate to all the places you are referring to but I do miss the Epicurean, that was great Greek food…I thought so anyway…
The urban myth in P.R when I was growing up was that the fine for assaulting an RCMP Officer was $25.00 compounded (1st time $25.00, 2nd time $50.00, 3rd $75.00) the 4th was jail time.
Myth went further to say that many of P.R’s young men kept $75.00 in their shoe.
OMG yes…oh that was my first party in Rupert at Cotton St. I drive by and see faces of people from the 70’s ( not litterally…lol).drop a few names: Hebb, Belland, Fortune, McCan, Husoys, I sound old but I’m still there. Memories are sweet… ya gotta love it.
Menzies,Tucker
Or the Halibut kings hockey team. What a bunch of rowdies…
I heard that the riot act has only been read in canada, a few times, but two of those few, were here.
