Apparently a smaller format Loblaw owned Real Canadian Superstore will be taking the space of former Walmart at RSM - this is what vendors and people close to mall owners/management have been told. Walmart has 3 months to clear out the store/remove items (believe most of this is done) and then the store will begin its conversion. Nothing official announced so who knows.
Interesting! Can they even put in a store at the present location? It’s my understanding that the site is unstable.
2 engineers said it was safe, I think WalMart just wanted an excuse not to re-up it’s lease, the store supposedly coming in is No Frills, same owners as Shoppers Drug Mart
Well, this will be good news, if true. I look forward to the announcement.
Please don’t hold your breath for this my friend. On that note, I do understand that the city/ highways are waiting for the final approval to fix the sinking sidewalk /intersection in front of the mall.
Heard specifically that it is NOT No Frills and NOT Wholesale club, but specifically Superstore as they will be selling home goods, clothing, electronics in addition to having a full grocery store/pharmacy
Also heard that Walmart may not be “done” in Prince Rupert and is looking to attach itself to development in Cow Bay in the future with their own detached store. This would fit with their model as PR store I believe was the last remaining “in mall” Walmart in Canada.
bthedog,
All interesting items! Are there any links to back-up these announcements?
Sorry - no links - all rumours. The person who told me, specifically said it was not a No Frills, because that was naturally my first thought when I was told Loblaws-brand store was going in there and I specifically mentioned it.
Either way - glad something is going in there. We need another grocery store option in this town. Obviously Superstore (even small format) would be better given they sell homeware/clothing in addition to groceries, but No Frills would be great as well.
The addition of a new Save On Foods in Cow Bay, whenever that project starts will be great for this city.
Maybe you’ll get an INDEPENDENT superstore like Vanderhoof. Part of the Loblaw/Superstore chain owned by a local franchisee. The one there’s been successful for years with a much smaller population.
We have both an Independent and a Real Canadian Superstore here in Fort McMurray. The Independent has a better deli, but otherwise is more expensive than the Superstore.
The Superstore has groceries, but also clothing, pharmacy, seasonal stuff, toys, and electronics. If it was the only game in town, it would really suck, though, because I’m sure Loblaws would love to hike up prices. But it’s right next door to a “FreshCo” and a Save-On-Foods that do compete on prices.
