Skeena Flooding 2011

is anybody up on talks re: the potential flooding of the Skeena River?

Levels are pretty high here in Terrace. I wasn’t here when the last flooding happened, so don’t know how to compare, but it is seems high to me!

Real-time measurements at Usk: wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/graph/g … tn=08EF001

Looks like it’s at 9 metres right now, but reached about 13 metres in 2007, which seems to be the highest it has been in a long time.

Thank you for the response.

The person I talked to mentioned a %120 more build up/snow melt than usual?

He also compared it to the last flood & that people in Terrace may be expecting worse.

I haven’t heard anything else, hoping to hear more thoughts on the potentials.

The water is up again, and it’s really noticeable in Terrace, and on the highway to Rupert. Just a couple more feet and it will be on the highway.

With warm weather predicted for the next few days, any remaining snow is going to melt quickly.

I was driving along highway 16 yesterday. Yep. The Skeena is very high indeed. I would not be surprised if the Skeena floods in the near future.

Thanks for feedback, going to get a report on things from family in Hazelton area this evening.

What has got my attention, is the talk about the amount of melt this year, wondering how significant that amount is compared to the past, therefore the potential for bigger consequences? The # I heard was %120 MORE build up than the past? would like to confirm that info.

I guess we will know one way or the other soon, would be nice to have an actual guage or big picture for the situation.

I don’t have anything to compare to personally, but there didn’t seem to be more than the average amount of snow in Terrace this winter. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t more snow further up the valley and into the Bulkey. Smithers and Houston are both flooding, for example.

I wonder if there are actual snowpack estimates published somewhere?

Meanwhile, the water at Usk is even higher this morning. Close to 9.4 metres: wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/graph/g … tn=08EF001

Edit: ok, this site says snowpack is 139% of normal for “Skeena-Nass” bcrfc.env.gov.bc.ca/bulletins/wa … urrent.htm

I think the weather forecast for the next few days is above 20 and sunny.

Some photos my wife took last night:

Damn if it crests and floods highway 16 I’ll be wrestling Grandma again for milk at Safeway.

Haha, yea, you really get to see who people truly are, when a natural disaster happens. Quite a bit of humanity is SOO selfish.

“what are you going to do with that much milk”

“I’m going to freeze it.”

eye roll

River is pretty high here.

I bought my first new home in Kamloops in 1972, moved in and was flooded out 10 days later.

Have you been down to Riverside Park by the Fort to see the markers of previous Kamloops floods?

Soggy, This was down at Rivers park. We’re along way from hitting the markers on the posts by the parking lot but there’s not much beach left. Many sections of the trail are closed due to flooding.

A friend of mine says the Exstew road was fine when he drove up it this morning, then was flooding when he came back 4 hrs later. There is a lot of snow up in them hills.

Looks like it hit 10 metres this morning…hopefully the water will go down otherwise places like New Remo may be in for some trouble.

Now would be a good time to panic and go buy all the gas in Prince Rupert

That looks like the Loch Ness monster.

Wholly conincidental, but I did actually fill up on gas today, so hey I’m ahead of the curve, literally I guess…

WOW…
we saw the water level yesterday coming back from Terrace and it was very high around Kwinitsa, and alot of snow still to melt. The waterfalls were many, so should fill the river quickly.

And the best part about it is when regular fuel runs out, you can buy premium grade gasoline for the price of regular gas at some gas stations. lol

Don’t forget to horde all of the milk… Cause you can freeze it you know…
