Re:spca

Now, I have a small problem. Since I used to work at the SPCA 4 years ago we kept asking the public to come support the SPCA and come walk with the dogs, and come play and interact with the animals. Now only twice had we turned down anyone to do so cause of a parvo outbreak and at the time a really bad case of kennel cough. As such the public wasn’t to go see the animals. My problem is, that my cousin’s have been walking the dogs out their off and on for the past 4 years, and they haven’t been their in a short time, but they went and they were turned down. Now they have to Sign up for a dog walking course, that isn’t being offered at this time, and as such, they are not able to walk any dogs,  they were able to go see the dogs. but that was it. My cousin’s Were escorted by their parent and they are both of age to walk them, My one cousin is 17 and she was turned down for sakes!! and I am sorry, this is kinda crap. I know a lot of people react differently with each dog and all, but wow. this is why their is a yard for the dogs to play in to tire them down…lol. I have some big dogs of my own at my house (including a 150lbs rottie)that they usually walk and know what their limits are, I know the SPCA does not know what ppl can and/or can not handle.

There is more to the course than that.  It is a liability risk for the SPCA to just let anyone walk dogs, especially those that are under the ‘adult age’ according to the law.  While I do agree with the simple idea that anyone should be able to walk a shelter dog, it is a lot more complicated than that.  Just because your cousin is successful at walking your large dogs doesn’t meant that a shelter dog that has just met her will be able to be controlled on the walk 100% of the time.  That one time that a new dog (to her) sees something that he/she wants to chase and does, while at the same time possibly dragging your cousin into the street where her or the dog can be hit by a car is why the SPCA has their rules about the orientation for volunteer dog walkers.

I have done the orientation in another city last year, and even I was turned down by the local SPCA here until I complete the one that will be put on here.  Yeah it sucks, but I get it.  There are already too many people in this town that think the SPCA is a good dumping ground for their unwanted pets, the last thing we need is people not even considering to volunteer because they thought the screening process was discriminatory - when technically, yes - it is in a way - because if you don’t meet their criteria for dog walkers then you will not be chosen to help out.  That kind of discrimination is the kind I can personally live with - if you can’t, then don’t volunteer - but there is no need to be badmouthing the SPCA just because don’t meet or don’t like their rules.

See, I am not TRYING to badmouth the SPCA.I am just in aw of how Odd things are. I can understand that a large dog or medium size would be a non walkable dog for a kid, but a very small dog…but anyways, This is why they wanted to Volunteer, cause they Did have the time and on the gorgeous day they wanted to give a small dog a walk, but anyhow.

From what I understand when going up there, is that they are not being able to find a staff member who wants to add another thing to their workload, I think would like a volunteer to do the course but I could be wrong. They had done a course previously and the people who went do not even show up anymore, so they feel like they are using their resources, but the people only will walk the dogs, when they are in the mood. At least they have the yard, for a little bit of an escape… :stuck_out_tongue:

Ok then I apologize for the snotty tone of my post - I was mistaken (and am GLAD that I was!  )

As for the volunteer to hold the course, I’ll try and call tomorrow and see if they would be open to that idea; I’d be more than happy to do it.

Yea, See, for myself, I am not able to volunteer to much time to it.I would love to don’t get me wrong as I do the mutt Strut and fundraiser that plus go to the garage sale and small things like that. But having my own “”“”“”“Shelter”“”“”"(((jk)))) plus work, I can not :frowning: but please let me know how things go with the “walking” and I’ll let my cousins know

I got a parvo rotty mix dog from  there three years ago, do you remember this dog?

Isn’t parvo a virus?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_parvovirus

That would indeed be a VERY memorable dog… :unamused:     Yes, parvo is a very infectious virus which attacks both the heart and the intestines. It can be prevented with a vaccine and if your dog is infected, there is a high mortality rate.

Yes I remember him!! you work at the Vets and cause Helen was on the Path of euthanasia that week he was gonna be put down cause of it. and instead you took him  How is he doing??? that was the pup i was gonna get if i didnt bet my rotti LOL
