The Drive BC website first identified the highway as closed around 6:30 in the evening, a closure that has resulted in no traffic being allowed in either direction from a point 16 kilometres east of Terrace, to 50 kilometres further eastwards.

Just saw the detour signs on the way to work this morning. They’re sending traffic through Cranberry junction.

What’s the scoop on what happened on the highway? Other than “police incident” ?

Just posted an update on my item on the blog,

CFTK TV is reporting that the RCMP is calling this incident an urgent policing matter, CFTK also said that unconfirmed reports have it that shots have been fired.

Right outside of Usk eh? And it just happens to be harvest weekend for all the outdoor weed growers and there is a large scale outdoor grower that has lived in usk for bout 20 years and the feds have being trying to take him down without luck for two decades I bet they finally got him pinned down with all the booty and he aint going peacfully…or alive!

I just got an unofficial report there is a lunatic shooting at cars going down the highway.

That is exactly what I got from my sources , some individual shooting at cars .

Hopefully the police can take care of this situation quickly and without anyone getting hurt. But it is good to know why store, grocery stores and other businesses won’t be able to get there orders today or until this is cleared up!!!
Thank you HTMF for the up-to-date information!!

There is an alternate route being provided for, so I imagine some materials will get through, though I don’t actually know what kind of condition the different roads might be in that they are routing folks through.

The Cranberry connector is just fine, but you’ll have to take your time. I was able to do about 60km on it. Adds a couple of hours to the trip, though.

serious indeed..... SWAT teams are now in that area

RCMP release: bc.rcmp.ca/ViewPage.action?siteN … ntId=17306
RCMP have released details as to the reason for a closure of a 40km stretch of Hwy 16. Terrace RCMP and the North District Emergency Response Team are currently maintaining a perimeter around a rural property in attempts to arrest an armed individual.

The Terrace RCMP are maintaining a road closure of Hwy 16 in order to ensure public safety during the ongoing attempts to safely arrest a 30 yr old Terrace man believed to be armed.

RCMP officers from the Terrace Detachment along with members of the RCMP North District Emergency Response Team are currently attempting to arrest a 30 yr old Terrace man in regards to a criminal investigation, which has unfolded over the course of the last week in Terrace.

"The risk assessment conducted during the investigation has concluded that the man has access to firearms and is currently in his residence on a rural property near Hwy 16. We do consider him to be armed and as such, have deployed the appropriate resources to safely effect an arrest.

At this time we are unable to release any further details regarding the ongoing investigation which led up to the man being found at his residence" stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

“Our highest priorities regarding this matter are, a peaceful arrest and resolution to this incident, all the while ensuring public safety and that of our officers. We have taken many precautionary steps which include the evacuation of some residences near the property in question.” added Cpl Dan Moskaluk

A road closure of Hwy 16 in the area was erected in order to ensure public safety as this incident unfolds. A detour route has been established, however this detour does add a considerable amount of travel time estimated to be an additional 5 hours compared to the normal route.

The road closure along Hwy 16 is for both directions from Terrace to Kitwanga. The RCMP asks that Terrace residents and others entering or leaving the area via Hwy 16 to consider this added travel time to their itinerary. The closure is for both directions of Hwy 16 from Terrace to Kitwanga.

A piloted detour is available via Hwy 37, the Nass Forest Service Road and Nisga’a Hwy 113.

We are unable to determine the duration of the closure due to the nature of the incident and ask that travelers also refer to drive.bc.ca for further road closure details.
Highway re-opening:
RCMP have one of two males in custody, Hwy 16 re-opening, police continue to locate the main suspect believed to be armed.

Update:

“Members of the RCMP North District Emergency Response Team have arrested one of two men wanted in connection with an ongoing Terrace RCMP investigation. A second man, the father of the main suspect was also sought by police in connection with their investigation. Police were able to confirm that the father was also at the residence since RCMP surrounded the property last night. The older man was taken into custody without incident late this morning” stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

"The ERT members were able to only safely observe the younger man fleeing the residence. ERT members continue to maintain a perimeter around the area that he is now believed to be in. The area in question poses little risk to the general public in relation to Highway 16, therefore we are able to safely re-open the highway to normal traffic. We have deployed an RCMP Air Services helicopter to support the Emergency Response Team in their efforts, this includes the continued use of a Police Dog Service team as well.

It is not a matter that the individual eluded police, but more indicative of our attempts and commitment to resolving the matter without further incident. Given our information, it is with little doubt that challenging the male as he fled could have resulted in a deadly confrontation. We are maintaining a perimeter in the area and will continue our efforts to arrest the man" added Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

And the second suspect arrested:
The Terrace RCMP and North District ERT have concluded their operations to locate and arrest an armed man. The second suspect was arrested with minimal incident this afternoon, after he fled his residence.

Update:

Reports from investigators and ERT members from the location are as follows:

“The suspects fled the residence using a boat, with members observing the father dropping off the son on the opposite side of the river, down stream. The father then returned to the property and was arrested without incident. An RCMP Police Dog and ERT members deployed near the drop site and conducted a search through the rugged terrain and dense bush, locating and arresting the 30 yr old man.” stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

“Our officers are to be commended in regards to their carrying out their duties in this incident from start to finish. It is at great risk to themselves that the search and extraction of the suspect in bush conditions was successfully concluded without injury to any. It is by far riskier for our members to deploy in these conditions compared to urban police interventions” added Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

Both 30 yr old and the 54 yr old remain in custody with the investigation continuing. Investigators will now work within the preliminary 24 hr detention period, in which a propsoed charge submission will be made to crown counsel.

Highway 16 has since been reopened.
