I have worked at quite a few places in Rupert over the past40 years and was working at the pulp mill when the coal port was being established, they said there would be no dust that they could control it. Afterward, the pulp made was not of the previous quality, full of black specks, and not acceptable to their customers, the beginning of the mills demise. How many jobs at the coal port? The pulp mill supported 1000 families! Don’t you think that if pinnacle had the technology to solve this problem the would revamp they’re existing site in Vanc. and not try to push this to a desperate community? And by the way the taxes on the east side will go up because of this not down, the west side will pay less, pinnacle won’t pay any to Rupert, where will it come from?
you gotta read up on your info there hissyfit. they are not wanting to come here because we are a desperate community or they dont want to “upgrade” vancouvers facilitys. it is because we are closer to asian markets. same reason everyone else wants to come here. get over it we are a shipping / recieving town.container port came here because of it and lots of families doing very well from it. potash wants to come here because of it also. if you dont like what our town has for jobs then get out lol
Rupert is not a hippie commune, it’s a port community on the rebound. It’s necessary for the Canadian economy, not just Rupert’s. Is it fair for us to hold Canadian industry hostage by preventing shipping opportunities because we want more access to our waterfront? Look at a map and you’ll see that 99.99999% of BC’s coast is available for your leisure activities.
I am not against pinnacle comming to town, just the location chosen. I think there’s a shipping berth paid for with our taxes near cow bay that’s almost always empty, why not utilize that giant dock for something productive,is putting those giant storage towers down there a good idea too?
one of the dumbest points I’ve seen on here… how much of the waterfront near Rupert is available? we just had Ridley Island shut down to us and the beach where the port is. I would love for the Pellet Terminal to come here but can’t we find a better location for it.
That space is already earmarked for something else. Check out the ports vision for that area on their website. I also initially questioned the location of the pinnacle site but it’s become clear to me after some research that it’s economically feasible for it to be located at the Westview site because of land prep costs at Ridley. It’s also become clear that there are bigger plans for Ridley that don’t involve pellets. Potash and LNG are looking at Ridley an require the space. The port has identified the need for recreational space and Don Krusel recent spoke about the ports social license. It’s got to be tough to balance the needs of everyone in a time when our community needs an economic boost and there is also ongoing community and quality of life planning. With that said, port and rail infrastructure dont support anything but industrial development at the Westview site. I see that the city is planning a waterfront planning meeting which involves Kwinitsa east to Galloway. This area is probably better suited for recreation, especially from Butze to Galloway. Miller Bay would be a great place for a waterfront park.
People that own vehicles can already get to some nice spots, what about all the min wage workers in this town that will never be able to afford a vehicle what good is fixing up rainbow and Diana or miller bay for them, the probable majority.

Really? Why do you think this community was built here? 100+ years ago Charles Hays envisioned port activities. That’s why we were built and that’s why our parents and grandparents moved here. Maybe not directly, but definitely indirectly. Without industrialization there would have been no fishing, grain, pulp or anything else. Without industry and jobs there would be no hospitals, stores, schools, etc. People moved here for opportunity. A very smal area has been carved out of the BC coast for the purpose of shipping and receiving and that’s what Rupert was founded on. Now we have people that have lost sight of our purpose. There are miles of coast line for you to enjoy. A 300-400 foot section next to a rail yard isn’t the right place for that.
They’ll have increased opportunity to make something more than minimum wage.
What about the minimum wage earners in bigger centers? How does a minimum wage earner in Delta get to enjoy Boundary Bay? No where is far away here and there is transit to Port Ed. I’m sure they’d pick up and drop off along the way.
Really? Is the port or the city going to pay for buses to Rainbow and Diana lakes too? Is that part of their plan when they talk of fixing up these areas, I don’t think so. As for there being 100s of miles of coastline to enjoy, the majority do not have access, do not own boats so there really is no access at all. Must be nice for those that do though!

I have no problem with development on our water front but leave some of it for the community to be able to enjoy. We already lost a lot of our water front access with where the port is and Ridley Island, putting a pellet terminal down at the main and one of the last water front access we have is a bit of a concern… isn’t there other locations this pellet terminal could be placed.
Also, there isn’t miles of easily accessible water front for us to enjoy.
This area has always been industrial and will remain that way, lets use it for that purpose. WE DO have access to our waterfront… what is Kwinitsa station and the area going east. That use to be industrial but now it’s public park area. They aren’t going to take this area away. It’s not like Pinnacle is a plant making things or using hazardous materials, its a storage facility. We are the quickest route to Asia, that’s why Prince Rupert is here, it wasn’t built for walking on the beach.
I didn’t say anything about Rainbow or Diana. I said Miller Bay. Only an idea. There is an existing bus service by the area and there are user fees. No additional cost but perhaps additional revenue. You’re out to lunch if you think it’s anyones responsibility other than the individual to find a way to get to any existing recreational area. You don’t need a boat to enjoy our coastline. Waterfront park, cow bay, Butze, Kloya. Short distances to Lucy, Kitson, Tugwell. The port has already indicated that recreational development on Lelu island is in the plans and the City is engaging in some other waterfront planning. It’s all going to work out, ok.
You never mentioned rainbow and Diana but the port talked about these places being fixed up for recreation, that’s why I mentioned them. So I don’t need a boat to get to Lucy, Kitson or Tugwell, I’m not that great a swimmer.

and when is the plans for Lelu Island? 15-20 years away? it’s one thing if these things are in motion and it eases the blow but when these things are so far off into the future it becomes a pipe dream like Rupert being a boom town or the Pulp mill starting back up.
I agree that there has to be balance but the Westview site isnt the place to put anything recreational. Honestly, I think it’s BS that access to Ridley has been limited. Some other port communities do not restrict access to these areas.
There are recreational areas available for you. It’s up to you if you use the ones within walking distance, take the bus, or invest in a boat. We’re not losing anything with the development of Westview by Pinnacle. It’s been nothing but a gravel parking lot since the grain elevator was taken down. Unfortunate for the few on Graham’s lower end in one respect but with increased development and a better real estate market, they’ll do well. I’d trade my house straight up for any one of those ones.
i’m trying to sell my home on the lower part of Graham and i’ve had alot of people viewing. nice home, good price but wouldn’t want to live here with pellet facility in front of me. you seem to have all the answers, why won’t my house sell?

I don’t have the answer to that. We are once again a growing community and are transitioning as well. No easy answers but with all of this there will be growing pains. One good thing about this thread is it raises te ports awareness as to how badly the community wants waterfront recreational space. I want that too but not in the area being discussed. First and foremost we need a healthy economy to allow us to build these areas. It’ll come. We should be lobbying to have another area developed for recreation and move past this site.
