By this time next week, eight people will arrive in Beijing from the north coast of B.C. as part of a delegation representing Prince Rupert and Port Edward.
Just a silly thought.
To the delegates: Please go after Sun Wave for their use/abuse of our stupidity!
If thats not on the agenda then please leave one or two delegates off this
farce of a trip and keep our library open on Sundays! It will at least provide some employment
in the City Of Rainbows.

Say goodbye to all those COSCO transport ships that provides one of the main source of employment in town. Pissing off Chinese officials and business people is never a really good idea.
But anyway, let’s hope they do something productive instead of having a whole bullshit session.
disgusting
pure pork chopping at its finest
some of the highest property taxes in the country…a gross muncipal worker to population ratio…crumbling infastructure and we have the finances to send a group of bumbling pork choppers to china?
spend the money locally…keep a library open…
leave the recruitment of business to those who know best…these effers dont have a clue…

I do believe this money is coming from a Provincial grant, so isnt like the City can choose not to go and spend the money somewhere else.
My Question again , is this going to be more productive then the last trip Rupert did in the 90’s. The Sister City and all the talk of trade?

Somebody is getting chop sticks as a homecoming present!
LOL! I have a feeling Sheila was using eccentric’s account today.
You mad Mrs. Gordon-Payne?
Big, gargantuan, silver chopsticks.
First of all, I’m sure this will cost the City something, even if it’s not much. Has the City paid any consultant or translator, or is all that coming out of grant too?
Second, Sun Wave is owned by the Chinese government, and is currently in a legal fight with the City. How about the City take a stand, and send a message that they will not suck up to a government that insists on treating Prince Rupert like crap?

It’s the same as any grant, regardless of who happens to be going on the trip. Another Mayor and Council, it’d still be a grant and it would be silly for the city NOT to send people.
Same as the grant to build the outdoor gym–who cares if it doesn’t get used all that much, it was free money, and with grants you have the choice of using it within the terms of the grant, or not getting the money at all.
City of Prince Rupert vs. People’s Republic of China? LOL! You Serious? You think it’s really that easy?
Pulling a Jack Mussallem is most definitely a diplomatic and economic suicide.
You seem to think money grows on trees.
The federal government budget is in a deficit, and as a Canadian tax payer I say that isn’t free money. I paid for these grants, and I hope those grants are useful instead of useless and wasteful.
So who cared? For a start that could be me.
So here is what I think,
The city got a $50,000 grant from the province to send a delegation to China. They have eight people going and some here are criticizing the decision to go because it is a waste of money. (And it might be.)
However, my guess is that the city would have been criticized (and likely by many of the same people) if they had decided not to go on the trip. ("How could you pass up the opportunity to go to China and perhaps make some connections?)
City Council can be criticized for some of the things they do. Too often, however, they are criticized for whatever they do. At this rate, I am expecting the biggest slate of candidates in the history of Rupert.
