No psychologist's in Rupert ?!

I find it annoying that there’s no registered psychologists in Rupert. I’m thinking I’m not the only one who could benefit from one…

I’m sure there is one at mental health. He is new to the town from the states and really good

There are plenty of registered psychologists in prince rupert. What there isn’t, is a registered psychiatrist. There is one that comes into mental health every month or so. But yeah, there are plenty of psychologists in town, and quite a few at mental health. Give them a call and book an appointment.

Nope- went to the doc’s and northern health. From what I found out Prince Rupert has 2 visiting psychiatrists and one that lives in town. There are no registered psychologists. So my options as I see them are to: - find one out of town - go see the psychiatrist ( not keen on treating with drugs) - or find a “therapist” who doesn’t have as many credentials and who I can’t get reimbursed from through benefits. Bottom line- I wish we had a psychologist in town- a good one. But maybe no one sane would live here- just kidding.

Maybe this is a dumb question but what is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

About $50,000 per annum

From my understanding psychiatrists can prescribe a person medication to deal with mental/ brain issues, while psychologists more simply talk you through your problems without the use of meds.

I checked the BC Psychological Association website and there are no listings for Prince Rupert.

That puts it into perspective for me. Thanks.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. He/she first becomes a general doctor than continues his/her education to specialize in psychiatry, the branch of medicine concerning metal health. A psychologist has a Ph.D. in psychology, the study of the human mind.

Is there a psychiatrist resident in town now?

From experience – Prince Rupert is a difficult place to recruit to. Distance, weather, attitude of entitlement (a generalization yes, but not untrue) – spouses usually feel too isolated and the shopping isn’t what it could be however with online access, it is no longer that big a barrier other than the need to get out of Dodge and see other stuff. NHA’s Mental Health department will have a contact name although it may be in Terrace or Smithers if we don’t have anyone here. Should help be out of town, there is also Skype or teleconference.

What people looking at moving here need to know is that when the sun shines, this is the best kept little secret. There are amazing places to explore and visit - either from the water or by hiking in. If you are selective in your choice of friends, there are amazing people here who will be friends long after you/they have moved away. Another best kept little secret.

I believe a Psychiatrist is also an MD with a speciality, which means s/he can prescribe meds if required.

Since February of this year Prince Rupert has had a psychiatrist : Doctor Edward Gayda. He moved here from Bellingham Wa. He loves our city and region weather and all. He works out of the health unit 2 days a week and out of a office on 4th floor of PRH 2 more days a week. Yes he can prescribe medications for mental health disorders… I believe you need a family doc’s referral (you can check at mental health 250 622 6310) to see him and yes it is fully MSP covered

Thanks for all the reply’s- though I’m not sure what you mean by “attitude of entitlement”. Totally agree with the rest of what you have to say about this place.

‘Here to Help’ is an excellent place to start if you are new to the fray of mental health disorders and have few local resources. Wade into the ‘Interactive Toolkits’ I’m betting that you will find out approximately what ballpark you are playing in. Then take your profile to your family doctor. The doctor may fix you with some mild meds and a few conversations or guide you forward to the mental health system. Educate your self. Be Patient.
