Media Center 2005

Has anyone used this yet? I like it, I got my comp hooked up to my Tv, and i have a remote to control it. I can run all my movies off my HD, and music, and pics.

Yeah, it’s called TiVo, and it’s been available for 5 years now. I’m glad Microsoft is “inventing” it now, though.

yes i have it, i built it it works great but I must say there are free front ends that do a great job and are free. all you need to do is buy the remote for media Center 2005. the free front ends work with a lot more tv turner cards for the pc, media Center 2005, needs to have a video card and tv card that have mpeg ships built into them.
here are a few websites
http://www.xpmce.com/
http://www.thegreenbutton.com
some free front ends.
http://mediaportal.sourceforge.net/
http://www.meedio.com
not so free

you get the picture. look around, I love mce 2005, I never miss a recording of tv shows, even changes my starchoice satalite stastions.

Maybe so but Tivo is avail in Canada according to their website. I’m acutally kind of interested in this gadget. It might be useful to have. Specially starting in Jan when Space starts some new Stargate stuff.

Nope, TiVo works fine in Canada when you have a linux box that can fetch the listings from zap2it labs and pretend to be the TiVo service.

Been working for years like this. Every night my TiVo calls the “service” and the linux box answers, gives it all the programming stuff. Free.

Or you can pay $15 / month or whatever it is for the official TiVo service.

Ok this sooo appeals to my geeky technical side that I have to try this.

Now to find an inexpensive Tivo. Ive already opened an account on zap2it now.

Are you using XMLTV to get the listings?

There are a bunch of ways to do it, and the zap2it people are great about giving you an XML feed.

I bought a cheap TiVo on eBay a few years ago, put a larger hard drive in it, and then ran a serial line from the TiVo to the linux box. (I have an old series 1 tivo, which doesn’t have USB or Ethernet – if you can grab one with USB or ethernet, you could just connect it directly).

Anyway, then I use an emulator to fetch the listings every night (it is about 2 weeks in the future). The TiVo talks to this emulator.

The TiVo is great, you can do all kinds of things like Season Passes, ratings, etc.

Anyway, you’ll want to register on forums.tivocanada.com – that’s where I learned everything. At first, since TiVo wasn’t available in Canada, these guys developed the tools (emulators, etc) to make it available.

You’ll want to look at Simplicity (which works under .net text mode – so I’ve been able to run it in Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows), and the other TiVo service emulators, such as TiVoZA.

Definitely a geek project, with lots of potential, since the TiVo itself runs linux, it’s super-easy to hack and customize.

Hi there,

Kinda new to the Tivo thing, and just ran across this forum. Does anyone know of a place to get Simplicity? (I know someone will point me to tivocanada forums, but the posts aren’t accessible until the user is ‘approved’, and I’m waiting on that… not sure how long it takes / if it will actually happen.)

PM me and I’ll let you know how to get it. Otherwise, you can register on the tivocanada forums.

I’m feeling like a bit of a noob, but I don’t see anywhere on the Zap2it site where it mentions XML feeds?

EDIT: Nevermind… I didn’t realize I should be going to zap2it labs and not just the main zap2it site. THANKS GOOGLE!

Kinda looks like the TivoCanada forums are going legit now that Tivo is moving into the Canadian market. Waiting for access to see if this is a worthwhile project or not. I kinda of like the idea of getting a series 2 tivo and using a usb wireless bridge to my network to call out for the TV listings.
