Due to a server “migration” (perhaps it’s gotten too cold and has flown south for the winter?), I’ve been without FTP access to my server for about 36 hours now. This is the third time this has happened, and since my first year with them is almost up, I think maybe I should start thinking about switching to someplace better. Any suggestions?
1and1.com is the best.
But have you tried using sftp? Nobody really does ftp anymore if they can help it.
What’s sftp? I use Fetch, and it seems like a fairly quick and easy way to copy files from computer to server.
1and1: What’s the difference between linux hosting and microsoft hosting?
sftp is ftp through ssh I think most ftp clients support it ws_ftp does.
Microsoft hosting is on a windows server (IIS) supports stuff like asp.net php etc. Linux is most likely apache php etc.

Try going into Mac OS X Terminal and typing “sftp hoshq.com”
What happens? Does it connect?
Do you do Linux or Microsoft stuff? Or is your website just html?
HTMF is linux, with php and mysql, for example.
Any luck with sftp?
lot’s use it all day : O )
No, I meant hoshq, he’s the one who asked the question.
But I guess he doesn’t want to answer.
oh. hadn’t tried yet. hold on…
doesn’t seem to do anything. just hangs with the words “Connecting to hoshq.com…” and after a few minutes “Operation timed out Connection closed”
Ok, it was working when I tried it two days ago. That’s why I suggested it.
You know, the Grim Reaper is only thing that makes Nascar racing exciting.
