Apparently , shooting Quail can very well get you a face full of buckshot. They’re fast, and you have to lead a bit… the article I read on the incident stated it happens every now and then when you’re shooting Q, you get peppered.
Unfortunately, Cheney shot a friend who was retrieving one of the birds he had shot (at least that’s what I got from CBC). Maybe his friend was moving fast and Cheney got confused.
28 Gauge at 30 yards, not much chance of hurting much, especially if they were using steel shot (which I doubt).
