Casino Trouble

The over/ under is probably sometime in September…

Thanks!

Like I said to Pat bet you can’t do that again?

Hanka, your too cool. You are trying very hard to convince everyone you are not addicted to gambling, but find it neccesary to post your winnings. Thanks for educating us on the perils of gambling. Now you are trying to solicit a date after flashing all your money. Nice, can I come too? lmao

Actually, the date was secured with smartass before I showed my winnings.

My bad. There was, however an agreement over an exchange of money! The negative effects of the Gaming Centre are already becoming a reality. LMAO

That’s okay, its all in fun (just as long as you dont lose your shirt).

All you folks against the casino, needn’t worry. Me and 12 friends of mine, all clever and attractive and with infinite resources, are going to pull off a brilliant caper to bring it all down.  :sunglasses:

Can’t be done!

You need a villan! To the Wasteland!!!

I can’t help but think that all this talk of addiction to gambling is little more than thinly-veiled attacks on something people find immoral.  Over here, we have pachinko parlors on practically every street in any city, regardless of size.  There are also mahjong parlors, horse tracks, bike tracks, ad infinitum.  Nobody talks about “addiction to gambling” because most people know when to stop.  And those who don’t, well, it’s their own fault.  Nobody held a gun to their heads to start in the first place.

Now granted, people have been known to become compulsive gamblers.  But the same can be said of almost any pleasurable activity.  And I will also admit that if people are not smart they can lose a lot of money in a short period of time and put themselves in a whole world of trouble.

That said, I have to say that equating casinos with heroin dealers is not only hyperbole but a false analogy.  Heroin is a chemical substance that causes withdrawal symptoms.  The withdrawal symptoms are a big part of the addiction.  You can’t say the same about gambling.  Furthermore, heroin is physically harmful to the body.  Gambling is not.

While some people may fear the implications that having a gaming centre may bring, it’s important to remember that they already have plenty of outlets for gambling, both legal and illegal.  Lotteries.  Bingo.  Keno.  Poker tournaments.  Kitchen table poker games.  Office sports pools.  If people truly want to gamble, there’s no shortage of opportunity to do so.

In the meantime, let’s also think of the benefits of having a local gaming centre.  For starters, it would be regulated, meaning people wouldn’t have to worry about being cheated.  It would be closely monitored, so people wouldn’t have to worry about being robbed after they come out with their winnings.  It would be local, so people could gamble locally rather than having to travel out of town to do so.  And of course, it would bring money into the community; not just to the gaming centre itself, but to the other businesses that would make money when people come from outlying areas to play.

I won’t deny that having a gaming centre has the potential for problems.  But that’s the way life works.

I do get upset when I go to the Casino in PG and see someone from the Fort there who was whining that morning about a hard drive costing $5 more in the Fort, and he’s stuffing $20s into a stupid slot machine all night.
If I wanted to hear ten hours of ding-badings I could plug the old Amiga together and play Arkanoid for free.

Greatly said! I really think we have bigger problems In Rupert than the need for a Casino. Your comments are rational fears and justified! Also you could include what happens a person wins and some punk/s are outside waiting to beat the crap out of them outside to get a quick fix on cash. I just do not understand the logic in building a casino. Is there going to be more jobs created lol? I see only future social problems look at how many poeple would go crazy over the bingos when prizes were high.

I agree that the Casino will not bring any value to our little community, other than more crime.  You may wish to ask some of the mill workers that frequented the Coast Prince Rupert Hotel after the off-track betting (horse racing) opened in 1994. Gambling can be more addictive than smoking or drinking.  Some of these men spent thousands of dollars chasing their next bet, and in the end, all they had to show for it was a lot of debt.  We only need to look around our community and see how many people sit in establishments that offer KENO to know that the problem is only going to get that must larger with a full fledged gambling establishment.  Good luck in trying to decrease crime…

just reading all the things that are said about the casino. from what i here the coast Rupert hotel owns it…or the owner of that is the owner of the casino…also there was an add on line here a little while back … they needed a poker dealer… great deal for some one haha. you work for $20.00 an hour… sounds good but you only work 5 hours a week… look at it this way if this is the way they are going to run it … lets all get a job there … another thing I heard is if you are hired there you are not at all aloud to play any games at all weather your working or not… so if we all go get a job there maybe it will be less people going broke. as working there is not going to pay your bills either. all in all guys there is nothing we can do … it is happening weather you want it or not… its no different then the port the way I see it… the port some how will bring in the drugs and thoses little girls. hey maybe even some guys… times are changing and that is all we have to do is be ready for it… all my windows are changed… lets hope they don’t break them when they try and get in… maybe there is something good out of this… next year they are closing 2 schools down… hey maybe they will even have classes in there for our grandkids… LEARN HOW NOT TO GAMBLE … there will be more complaints about everything coming to town . stores closing here and there … to make room for the box stores… if you treat me like I will treat you things will not be that bad… but most stores now in town are we can get for you in 2 to 8 weeks . when we all want things right now … Im that way if I go to a store and want something that is in a flyer I should be able to get it… not here we dont have it … then you have to make a road trip out of it… there will be a problem with the gamblers . but if it is not you . and you know you can go there and enjoy your self with $20.00 and walk out ,happy so be it… but the only thing that bothers me out of it is  the little kids that are going to be at home with the empty box of fruit loops . waiting for mom and dad to get home from there. lets just hope and pray the new fade of the casino will not last for ever…

Good idea for people (like me) who have a gamblling probelm to get a job ina  casino, not sure if it would work or not, but its a shot , so how do you send in aresume there

I dont know about the casino here in Prince Rupert, -but- I have a friend who works at the Edgewater Casino in Vancouver and I wanted us to play craps one night when he got off work.  Well, you can imagine how surprised I was to learn that employees must leave the casino when they are off work… they can’t gamble in the casino which employs them.  This just might be a rule with this casino too.

From what I understand it’s a rule with all Casino’s.

same with the bar end of things.  the people who manage the bar, as well as the casino owners and upper management are not allowed to drink anything while off shift.  probably for the best, BCLC has some pretty strict rules.

oh, and if you have a gambling problem, you can do what’s called voluntary self exclusion, go in when it opens, ask to be put on that list, and from that point on you will not be allowed in there, no matter what.  it’s one way of keeping yourself out of trouble.

So what you are saying is 1/4 of Prince Rupert should get a job in the Casino so they do not get addicted to gambling!!!
