Car train collision sends local woman to hospital

A train - vehicle incident at Port Edward resulted in a woman being transported to Prince Rupert Regional Hospital on Tuesday morning. As a car driven by the 56 year old was struck by a train at the Nelson Drive railway crossing in the District.

Just before 9 am, members from Port Edward and Prince Rupert Fire Rescue, the RCMP and BC ambulance arrived on site to extricate the motorist from her car, using the jaws of life.

Fire Rescue personnel transferred the trapped motorist from the vehicle to a waiting ambulance, which after stabilizing her condition transported her to Prince Rupert Regional.

She was subsequently transferred by air ambulance to Vancouver for treatment of internal injuries.
