Advantage Ms. Martin in the recycling debate

While the Mayor may have famously said “No you may not”, it would seem that it may end up a case of maybe we can. As not everyone would appear to be on the same page as his worship when it comes to examining the issue of recycling in the region.

As we outlined on the blog last week, at the last council meeting, Mayor Jack Mussallem made some unfortunate headlines with his stern admonishment of local recycling proponent Jean Martin, shutting down her efforts to draw attention to some concerns over the hours of operation and management of the local recycling facility in the industrial park.

Good for Mrs. Martin, hopefully this gets some attention to the problem

Hopefully, Ms Martin has also succeeded in shining some light on questionable decision-making at the regional district, an organization that gets almost no attention but whose administration is disproportionately funded by Rupert taxpayers.

As the city’s most prominent representative on the board, the Mayor has gone along with spending tax money on some rather costly (and odd) staffing decisions and on generous honouraria and perks for board members, with the result that services were cut back at the recycling centre, the only regional district service worth talking about that benefits city residents.

Your point is well taken, Regional District is such a mysterious level of government for most residents at the best of times, considering that recycling is probably the only interaction that local residents have with that level, you would think that they would have been a little more agreeable with the concerns of those paying the bills there.

It’s interesting that by trying to stop Ms. Martin from saying her peace at council last week, the issue now seems to have boomeranged back onto the Mayor, not sure if he has advisors or not, but if so they certainly haven’t offered him very much in the way of damage control guidance on this one.
