Prince Rupert Fire Rescue was called to the Ocean Centre Mall at approximately 2:30 on March 23 to respond to a fire in the building.
Deputy Fire Chief Dave McKenzie said the fire occurred in the mall’s maintenance shop on the lower level, and the cause of the fire was determined to be an issue with the wiring of a portable oil filled heater. According to McKenzie, an employee tried to extinguish the fire before they arrived, but the fire caught on to some rags and singed the walls. However, it was not a big fire and the six attending firefighters extinguished the blaze in a matter of minutes.
