Totem Marquee coming down

Walked by this morning and notice city workers taking it down (for the best, as the next big windstorm might have dropped in on someone’s head). Still, for you Rupert oldtimers, that must bring back memories.

About damn time something was done at that building…it is the biggest eyesore in the downtown area…hopefully they fix the rest of that shithole up.

I agree, I have lived here for 31 yrs now which is all my life. The downtown area especially all along 3rd avenue is a disgrace to the City.

I don’t completely agree…I would say more buildings are looking good than not…there are just a few of them that are really dragging the entire street down…Totem Building, Old Home Hardware, New Moon Building, Old Empress Building and some residential properties closer to 4 Corners.

Time for the city to start bringing the damn hammer down on the owners of these properties.

Yes those building are for sure the big eye sores and need to be dealt with. I think one of the biggest problems for new business’s coming and going is the high price of rent. Not sure what a typical store front would be a month on 3rd avenue, but I’am sure it is pretty high.

I find it funny that the city seems to be more interested in derelict houses and rental units, while apparently looking the other way at derelict commercial properties on Third Avenue. It is time for the city to tell the owners of the old Totem theater to either fix it up or tear it down. If they do not, the city should tear it down, and bill the owner, just like they did on that derelict rental property further down Third avenue.

It seems to me that the City has left ugly properties, both residential and commercial, go for so long that the problem is now overwhelming. Kind of like a hoarder … leave it too long and the problem takes on a life of it’s own. All they can do now without hiring a department of people to address the issue, is chip away at the ugliest first and go from there. Throw on top of that huge pile, a community that thinks it is okay to dump it’s garbage in some of the most beautiful places … Wantage Road, Kloiya Bay, Taylor Lake, Prudhomme Lake, Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee, and the list goes on. If you can drive to these places, you can afford to go to the dump.

What/where is Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee?

^ Between Prudhomme Lake and Rainbow Lake.

They are those two small similar lakes (ponds more like it) right next to each other on the stretch of highway between the end of Prudhomme Lake and Rainbow Lake.

The Totem needs a whole bunch of upgrading to bring it up to code. Is the building still for sale? I believe the Casino were the last owners, perhaps the present owners.
I always thought the side of the building, facing the Norhtern Savings Credit Union would be perfect for a wall mmural.

sigh…my first very first date was at the totem theater…can’t remember the show though…

so who actually owns the Totem? … it would be nice to see some improvements made for sure, maybe even open it up again. I’m guessing it might be kinda tough finding a grant that promotes the arts though.

That’s those two little lakes just before you get to the turn off to Rainbow Lake. They are on the right hand side of the road as you drive (east) up the passing lane from Prudhomme Lake.

For some reason, this building is not being singled out for upgrading…I have no idea why…but a freaking coat of white paint on the outside would work wonders at this point.

The building is an embarassment to this city in its current state.
