Throttling of internet

I have mentioned this once before in making a connection to Ketchican Alaska to there fiber link. Takes Telus out of the equation.

See GCI’s new fiber link:

Sorry  i know this is a link but this may help those torrent lovers get their speed back, and it is related to this topic.

howto.wired.com/wiki/Optimize_Bi … oling_ISPs

That link would only apply if the ISP is traffic shaping.  Citywest has said they aren’t going to shape traffic based on the application you’re running, only on the total amount of bandwidth you are using.  So that method won’t make you any faster.

Yes, that’s right, encrypting torrents on Citywest shouldn’t make a difference now that they’ve stopped shaping P2P.

However, it may make a difference on the other side of your connections – many users tend to turn on encryption and ignore unencrypted peers.

A gentlemen came into the Friendship House this morning, collecting the petitions for the throttling of the Citywest’s network. He explained to me that while the citywest is throttling the connections of their clients, they won’t be “throttling” the cost of the service. (an amusing thing to say, I might add)

He also informed me that, since he’s the one organizing the petition, Citywest formally contacted him to request that he stop what he’s doing. (lol)

I was happy when I first upgraded my net from dsl lite, the little 49kb/s was horrible for gaming but it was possible.  then I upgrade to the premium, then it was great, downloading patches for games or drivers for diff parts of the computer going at 500+kb/s it was perfect, pings were lower in games.

then at some point probably a month or so after my upgrade, I started seeing 300-500 ping in games again… downloading patches for games? not worth it.  I only play one game now because there are way too many patches and come on… 14kb/s… i don’t want to wait 3 weeks downloading them anymore, I did once and when it did finish… some files were missing because my connection got dropped a couple of times during  the download.

I just love having to download a 540mb file over the duration of 2-3 weeks then finding out all I did was waste my time… loving it. I rarely see speeds over 30kb/s, city west said the only reason my speed is so slow is because I live so far away from down town.

I live closer then my friend does, he has standard dsl.  he downloaded the same patch for the same game at 145kb/s and he was complaining that it was slower then usual.  it only took him 2 hours I was devistated

I was down at citywest today for internet related issues,  I had a chance to ask about the throttling.  I was told it would be for “Heavy Users” After explaining my average usage I was told I was not even close to the people they will be throttling.  I though I would be,  but I guess there are a group of people out there using way more in total adding up to the Terabyte level.

I was told the equipment was not even in yet and those users who are not gluttons will not be effected. I know the person I talked to and trust his answer.

Good to know,  Now if they could only add some bandwith to the plans they have existing…

has anyone called and talked to the guys at city west ?  In vancouver say a company ( isp )  gets charged and avg of $4 or $5 dollars a GB and that up here in our neck of the woods its around $150.00 a GB  and  as we know  city west probably doesn’t have all sorts of cash lying around to throw on new equipment that will utilize more than the whole  12 % of the optic fiber cable that we use lol all = $$$$$$$  :unamused: :unamused:

Because you really don’t have another choice?

Which is exactly why they can get away with it.

Too bad CityWest didnt have some sort of competition. Then maybe their internet would be better.

Why do so many of you like posting one meaningless test as if it has something to do with ‘your’ internet speed? And nothing to do with throttling?
Try ipfrog. It’ll give you a shitty result, a "quality of service rating’ only they know how it’s arrived at and at least bombard you with ads for who can sell you ‘better’ internet (none of which are available, even if you testing from one of them already).

pingtest.net is absurd. Got an A a D and an F on three different servers. 12% packet loss once? 250 pings in a few seconds?
