A 24 year old man is in serious but stable condition in hospital in Vancouver, after a police involved shooting incident on the Tatlow Road in Smithers on Saturday afternoon.
An officer from the Smithers Detachment had pulled over a vehicle reported stolen earlier in the day in Houston, as he attempted to remove the driver from the truck, the driver reportedly accelerated the vehicle dragging the officer along the road, it was during that stage of the incident that the officer fired his weapon hitting the driver…
Highway 16 was blocked off to both lanes of traffic until Sunday afternoon, and investigators were taking pictures, and surveying the scene with 2 vehicles covered in tarps, one on the highway, and another on the road below. I had no idea it had anything to do with a shooting… people were saying it was a car accident.
Must have been quite the sight for Smithers, turns out according to the latest reports anyways that a number of shots were fired at the driver who had tried to take off with the constable still trying to apprehend him. Seems like a scene out of Law and Order, CSI et al.
Smithers is lucky there is a side road they could use to divert Highway traffic, because that road was closed for 24+ hours. It also helped all the looky-loos who wanted to sneak a peak!
