Re: Colin James

he’s doing an acoustical tour of the boonies with Craig Northey who he occassionally writes and jams with, so no  drums, no horns hardly even some electrical guitar. As for the PAC, PRSS is putting on their gala tribute to the eighties this week and weekend there, thus he’d be smelling hairspray all night if he played the PAC in between scenes…

That, and the fact that most likely “the Underground” offered up a better deal.  Agree with it or not, the new owners are attempting to change their clientele.  This, the Trooper concerts, the “remodeling” and some of the other ideas they have pitched are all an attempt to clean and class up the place.  Whether it works or not remains to be seen.

yep you’re right, the owners of the Rupert Hotel are also the owners of the Treasure Island Casino in PG and the duo have played there the last two nights, no doubt it was part of a package deal.

I would imagine once the new Gaming Centre is up and running next year that these kind of shows will end up there.

Taking down the Hollywood-themed art and replacing all of the lightbulbs with blacklights just isn’t doing it for me

Don’t forget the candles, table cloths and the VIP room that the barstars all love to hang out in!!!

I feel the same way Eso.  No matter how much polish you polish the paint, a beater is still a beater.

Just got back from the Colin James show.  Very very cool.  Colin said that he may have left his voice in PG during the back to back shows there, and he did struggle through some songs, but the combination of him and Craig Northey was pretty special.  Hope his voice is a little better for those going to the Friday show.

The tickets said “doors open at 7:30pm”.  We showed up at 7:40, and the line-up was around the side of the building down as far as the dining room windows.  they didn’t actually open the doors until around 8:15 or so.  We were in the back as well battling to see through people that showed up later and decided to stand in the way.

In case you are wondering what songs he played, the only “popular” James songs he played was “Five Long Years”, and his cover of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic”.  They also played “Someone Who’s Cool” by the Odds.  The bulk of the set was pretty bluesy.  Great show all in all.

People in the back were yelling “Voodoo Thing!!!”, but not all song translate well to acoustic.

Hey, Stanley, when did James start playing?

Colin came on at the start of Craig Northey’s 3rd song playing mandolin, which was around 9:45-ish, and he stayed on for the rest of the set.

Not sure if many of you know but Craig Northey wrote the them for Corner Gas.  That was his first song.  Second song was a song he wrote for the Who.  I guess they asked songwriters all over who were influenced BY them to write a song or two FOR them.  Craig’s song was picked but never got recorded because shortly after that John Entwistle died.

Not to be a stickler, but he co-wrote the song “Not a lot goin’ on” with Jesse Valenzuela of Gin Blossom fame.  The two put out a album together in 2004, it’s not bad.

Since then Northey has put out an album with Rob Baker of the Tragically Hip.  They perform under the name “Stripper’s Union”, the album is titled “Local 518”.  Simon Kendall of Doug and the Slugs and Pat Steward and Doug Elliot, both formerly of the Odds acted as the back up band on the album.  Definitely a must have if you are an Odds or Northey fan.

Has anyone even heard of the odds? I remember like 10 years ago seeing a music video of them.  I think the song was called brains, and the video was shot in a space atmosphere

ahh yes… I remember “Wendy under the stars” - two versions - the radio (clean) version and album (not so clean  ) version.  I believe the album was called “Neopolitan”

You are a little mixed up.  The Odds video with the “space atmosphere” is for the song “I would be your man”.

As for the song called brains, you are most likely thinking of the song “Eat My Brain”.  It also had a music video, but the video is in black and white mini-movie, where the Odss run out of gas while driving around.  They steal some gas from some guys in a truck and then the guys in the truck chase them around.

As far as the band goes, they split up at the beginning of 1999.  Prior to that they released four albumn and a greatest hits cd.

Wendy Under The Stars album version is much better than the radio version
