Noise

I’ve been reading the Utne Reader Mag this summer. The current issue has a few interesting articles about noise. In an interview with Murrary Schafer, the father of Acoustic Ecology (a Canadian) I learned two interesting, but useless pieces of trivia:

  1. The sound of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle is copyrighted. No other motorcycle can have the same sound. (Harley-Davidson sued Honda, because Honda was coming close to the same sound.)

  2. The US army in Iraq (likely during other wars as well) played heavy metal music for 24 hours at 150 decibels or more just to drive the people crazy, prior to entering a village to root out insurgents.
