Newfie in Afghanistan

Dunno if you guys remember the discussion of the Newfie accent (versus the Newfie dialect), and I said that I detected a Newfie accent in Rock Hillier’s speech on the radio (though he didn’t use the dialect).

Well, it turns out that Rick Hillier is indeed a Newfie:

He’s the NATO commander in Afghanistan.

Also, the local CBC guy is a Newfie too, right? He definitely has a touch of the accent (either that or he’s from Cape Breton and is pretending to be a Newfie).

Yes, I remember the discussion. Interestingly, last summer I met a Newfie from California while camping in Southern Oregon. He left Newfoundland to join the US Marines. But I don’t remember how he talked, just that he talked a lot (must be the American in him now).

Just listening to Rex Murphy on CBC, that dude has the accent for sure.
