Mayor Jack Mussallem on the Casino

LOL

But there is jobs, what about the port… sniggers

Woo hoo for the rich getting richer.

why do people think there is no jobs from the port im doing good from it along with 150 - 200 other people we all arent working 5 days a week but my mortgage gets paid and i can have a meal out with the family here and there. no matter what happens people in this day and age just want more and more and have it given to them for free and with little effort. i have 2 jobs theres jobs out there people just have to put effort into getting them

I like that idea Soggy, if we did this and many followed it would certainly put a dent in their
little money wagon.

What about the single mother of three, who works minimum wage part time hours at several places, because she doesn’t have a highschool education… She can barely afford to take care of herself let alone three children, where’s the compassion for these people? hmm??? And what if she is TRYING to get her highschool diploma, but has to keep a job as well to keep her children with food, and shelter… And don’t forget child care for her three children while she busts her ass at three jobs plus schooling part time… How is the port affecting her?
Hmm?
Isn’t she making effort? For what? Hmm…

And do you think I could get a job at the port?
Doubt it, at least not one that would keep the rent paid and the bills paid, and the food in the fridge. Oh yea, you can join the longshore union… See if they call you, maybe once or twice every four months… Yeah yeah, jobs everywhere, for everyone!!! JOBS GALORE!!
LMAO you guys make me laugh.

never said the port is gonna solve everyones problems just said there is jobs. and yes you could have gotten a number down there when they started up. but you didnt go down to get one i guess .and the single mother of three if they choose a man who doesnt help with the kids thats her choice not my choice or the container ports problems. the port is a start of things to come we are still in a recession have been for years in this town now the world is just gotta be patient . things dont happen overnight.

Let the herding of the cats begin!

As for the lady or gentleman who wishes to continue or finish school that program has either been slashed or soon to be by the liberals. Hecate strait may come up with a band-aide program somewhere down the line. This is where these so called profi ts should go and I heard they Chances are real dickheads to work for as well,  but thats another Jerry Springer show.

A little history and I like to gamble either on scratch tickets or lottery or the casinos. I don’t drink but I have  limit and stick to it. DO I think I will win big NO do I hope I win big YES, Hope springs eternal!  The government oh 25 years or so when the lotteries first started … the local charities and sports groups were getting big money slowly and sadly that has long gone.  The bingo hall whose licence was one of the last ones to be held by the local bingo assocation whose groups consists of the the societies and not for profit groups that hold a bingo licence  This is the only way that these groups now get any money, it was either go with the casino ie join as the coholder of the licence and receive $ for your programs or don’t join lose your non profit status and your bingo licence. I don’t think at any time did anyone state that this was going to bring lots of jobs or wealth to the city.  It does give employment to the people that work there, but others as well, the snow removal company in the winter, and also $donated to causes such as the Relay for Life, the Mt Hays Challenge, PR minor hockey to name a few.  Now prior to the casino one of my organizations was getting $220 per month in gaming revenue, it is now in the neighbourhood of about $460 per month, not sure for how long .nothing lasts forever!

I I

I am sure that the govt is going to get rid of the charity side of things … that is what Gordo is good at … this is a very hot issue, but as a local charity rep, I for the mean time am glad that my little PAC at my kids school, does get some money that we use for extras for the kids at school.

Man… you guys are hopeless.

Pessimism is what half of Rupertites do best; thinking it will solve a majority of the town’s problem.

I went to a talk by a gambling counsellor (the position is funded as a response to addictions). If memory serves me correctly, the machines are designed to pay out 70 cents for every $1 put in, but the ones at Chances are linked together so that the 70% payout is for all the machines in a row. Count the number of machines in the row, divide that into 70% and those are your odds of getting your money back. The odds of being money ahead are smaller than that.

Sure, money is given to local associations and such, but do the profits stay here and continue to circulate around? I suspect that gambling is a negative-sum game for an isolated market like this.

My understanding is that the slots are linked provincially, controlled by a master program for the province.

I think many would agree with me that we have valid reasons for our pessimism…Just look around you… :unamused:

They are monitored provincially, but they don’t need to be “controlled” in the sense that they are rigged.  The slots (and card games) are certified random.  So the 70% payout is true only over the long term – it’s a statistics thing.  Each night a single machine can payout 1000% or 1%, it’s random.  But in the long run, the odds are exactly 70%.

My father used to freak out when his machines would pay out crazy amounts, and he would start to panic about them not being such a good financial investment.  I told him to look at the “year to date” figures instead of the nightly ones.  They are always right on 70%.

That’s why gambling is a tax on people who are bad at math.  If you don’t get the concept that random numbers operating on fixed odds will, in the long run, always fit those odds perfectly, then you’ll fall for the trap of playing more than just occasionally.  And the more you play, the more you’re flattening out that randomness into the predictable 70% payout.  That’s how people get hooked – they get the one big win, and expect the same behaviour over the long run.

Oh.  My.  God.

So she chooses a man that ends up being a bad choice as a father and provider for the kids he helped create and it’s all her fault?  I really hope I am reading too much into your post - that the message of ‘meh, screw her, she picked him’ - I really hope is wrong.

Contrary to what some believe - it takes two to create a child but only one a-hole (mother OR father) to walk away and say ‘not my fault!’  :unamused:

You’re not helping… =.=

so get some drive and get out and get  a job and dont rely on the man !! wow if men  can do it why cant women? yea not all men are dead beat!!!

Dude, this hypothetical woman has more than one job. And is going to school, AND has to take care of three children.

Get off her ass? What?

There are women out there like this. in this situation, and helpless completely!

UGH, another appathetic person, no wonder I’m so misanthropic…

I have to agree.  I go in every once and a while,  I go with the intention of having a beer and put $5 or $10 in the machines.  I Have probably spent over $150 total in all the times I have been there ( not including the beer I bought).  My self I have been lucky enough to have had a few big wins,  but 50% of the time I walk away with nil.  I am fine with that,  I find it a fun way to enjoy my beer, watching the people rub the screen and do all their little rituals with the machings is pretty funny in a very sad way.
Myself I get a little chuckle that I have taken $3000 or $4000 out of the place in winnings. My little dig at chances and their bottom line.

That’s all true.  That’s why I never play slot machines.  I stick with blackjack where if you know what you’re doing and play wisely, you can actually have better odds of winning than the house.

I doubt if that’s true for the blackjack machines though at the casino up there.  They probably follow the 70% payout.
