A fascinating session of point - counter point played out on the pages of the Northern View today, as Prince Rupert Mayor Jack Mussallem took offence to the theme of an editorial from the Northern View’s Shaun Thomas.

At issue the tone and content of Mr. Thomas’s thoughts on the recent All Native Basketball Tournament and a very public absence of the city’s Mayor at those events…

What’s with referring to himself in the third person?  Doesn’t Jack know how to use a pronoun?

“Shaun Thomas, in reality the Mayor should give you a swift kick in the ass.”

Let me translate that for you:

“Shaun Thomas, why can’t you run stories about French chefs instead of asking embarrassing questions?”

Keep it up, Shaun.  Mayor Jack has just proven what an asshole he really is.

Apparently in the past invitations have gone out to important people the ANT want in attendance, but they didn’t this year. Still, it seems like the kind of thing an attentive Mayor would make a phone call about if he was uncertain if he was welcome. Plus, it’s not like it’s an invite only event. As Shaun Thomas said in his reply, he didn’t get an invitation (but still went,) and neither did Gary Coons, who from the sound of things did a nice job trying to save the City some face when Mayor Mussallem didn’t come forward.

I have to say, Mayor Mussallem’s letter was rather over the top.  Not something one would expect to read from a publicly elected official.
