Linux Laptop

I would if i new i would get hired

I could probably arrange that er pm me

The problem I posted with Ubuntu 5.10 finding the wrong video driver on ECS mobos… well 6.06 DD rulez! Boots into Live mode with a GUI installer that took 15 minutes to setup and reboot fully operational. Another 15 mins for 71 upgrades (using rc2) and yer done.
This has got to be the BEST Linux home desktop version yet…

Awesome, I’ve been waiting patiently for Ubuntu 6.06 to be fully released.  I’ll be downloading, burning, 6.06 as soon as it is put on the Ubuntu mirrors on thursday:-)
I’m hoping that the good people at Ubuntu have beefed up their download mirrors.  When they released 5.10 the servers really got clobbered.  Thanks for the recommendation, 6.06 sounds excellent.
Does it run about as fast as 5.10, that is, does it use about the same amount of swap, RAM?  I run older PCs:-)

It’s actually a little faster and less overhead with all the recent gnome optimization that went on

I was going to wait, but when rc2 downloaded at 1100kbps and grabbed the updates at over 700kbps… why?
It’ll be 2 weeks before the mirrors settle down with the new release. Apply online for some CDs. they send you a bloody crate full. Still have plenty of the previous releases and I mailed them to everyone I knew…

I may set up a mirror on a 100mbps connection if I get a chance in the next week, if I do I will make it semi-private.

Awesome!!  Thanks, for the feedback:-)  That’s really good to know that it’ll run well on my older Pllls.

Yes, I’ll bet you’re right!  I’ll try the download of 6.06 tomorrow and burn the cd.  If the download is deathly slow I’ll hold off installing for a bit, let things settle down.

Excellent idea!

Anyway, I’ve already answered this part – it’s not on a lap, and it’s not charging.

But I just wanted to follow up by saying that I’ve been using my Macbook for a few hours now, on_my_lap while it’s charging.  It’s definitely not as hot as the Dell while it’s charging.  The Macbook fan kicked in at one point for about 2 seconds, but just once.  At least I think it was the fan.

I’ll report back when I compare it to the Dell on battery power.

Posting from that $699 Acer laptop running breezy badger live disk. Slow as bejeezus with only 256MB and running off CD.
But it configured everything correctly including the wireless! You just wouldn’t wantthison your lap either it vibrates with CD acess. Well maybe if you were female, you’d never take it off your lap…
These things come with a 40Gig split into two 20 Gig FAT32 partitions too. Wonder why?

Well after only 30 minutes or so on battery power, the temperature has dropped quite a bit on this Macbook.Ƃ It isn’t hot at all.Ƃ Compared to the Dell, it’s cooler.Ƃ And definitely cooler than the Dell while charging.Ƃ Ƃ I’m not sure if this is a first-run machine or not, it could be a second series or something.Ƃ No complaints here.Ƃ

Gonna try the Parallels workstation thing in a bit.

What is this all about ?

maybe you did get rev 2.0…

So I’ve spent the last little bit trying to make this Macbook heat up.Ƃ The only way I can get the fan to come on is by running Windows XP in Parallels, and running a really long filter on Photoshop CS2 on the Mac side.Ƃ The fan comes on for 5 or 6 seconds, then cuts out for a bit.

Even then it’s only warm, not too hot for a lap.Ā  Honestly, the Dell is hotter, and the Powerbook G4 is hotter.

Oh, Parallels is here parallels.com/
