Hawkair lands main terminal deal

Correction to Earlier Post Hawk does not fly out of Rupert on Saturdays in the winter…
Well, as far as the cruise ship terminal goes, everybody’s got 20/20 hindsight, eh? If there’s federal money available and cruise ships looking to expand their ports of call lists…I bet it looked like a golden opportunity at the time. Hard to predict that we’d get afternoon calls that would turn out to be poorly reviewed. The day-long calls seemed much better all 'round.Seven years of cruise ship money is better than nothing…which is what we had. I just don’t think the cruise ship dock vs better transportation services should be an either/or.

And the idea that the VIA Rail station, which is a heap of bricks currently, should be upgraded at taxpayer cost to service a combined rail/airport connection…well, do you see where VIA is right now? It’s combined with the ferry terminal!! See, there’s a building doing double duty already so why not expand THAT venue and do the airport connection right there?

There’s your transportation hub!!
Great Idea RE: Via Station… except people will bitch about the expensive Cab ride to and from the airport bus as they do now from BC Ferries and Via

As a passenger, I LOVE the South Terminal. It’s easier, and SO MUCH FASTER to check-in, grab a snack, and head thru security, all within a half hour of boarding the plane! The South is so much faster to get out of, easier for my friends and family to pick me up at, and the least amount of hustle and bustle the better! It’s not that hard to grab the shuttle to the main terminal, and hop on the Skytrain… but I guess some people just don’t like doing things that way.

On the business end though, moving Hawk to YVR makes better business sense. They will now be able to access a bigger customer market, have more amenities, and just “feel” like a bigger airline. I think Hawkair will open itself up to a whole lot of new customers with the move.

True dat…but if they can afford to fly out of here, they can afford the cab ride.

I for one hate the idea of moving to the main terminal, not that my opinion will matter unfortunately. This is one reason I prefered Hawk Air to Jazz.
Like the south terminal far more. Sorry to hear this and wish it was not going to happen.
What can you do though.

I’m all for the Main Terminal, sorry guys.

If you’re connecting to anywhere else, South Terminal is a pain in the butt. If you’re going to Vancouver, then the SkyTrain wins over a taxi.

South Terminal is convenient only if someone is picking you up or dropping you off, even then the main terminal isn’t too bad.

Just like Prince Rupert airport is only convenient if someone is picking you up. In a boat.

You’re right, of course, but again this is one of those “hindsight” type of arguments: ten years ago there was no Skytrain to the Main Terminal and I’ve bussed out of the Main Terminal to the Bridgeport Loop to wait for a downtown bus…,not very convenient with baggage. And that only changed a year ago. And MiG, if you’re connecting to the Island, then the South Terminal works perfectly for float plane and Pacific Coastal transfers. Just because it didn’t work for YOU doesn’t make it bad for everyone.

Of course, lots of people connect elsewhere and for that Air Canada currently trumps Hawk Air. Now, the Main Terminal certainly makes more sense, although if you DO have to make those Island connections (which many people from Rupert do) you’re taking the reverse shuttle. But I expect that’s a far smaller fraction of the travellers.

Ten years ago the South Terminal worked… now it made Hawk Air feel second rate, now they are going to operate in the same space as the big boys… Hawk will do very well in it’s new space…

Main terminal is better from a business perspective and for any connecting flights. None of this matters to me of course as I refuse to fly until they stop hiring homosexuals that want to feel my junk/see me naked before I can fly.

They don’t do that in Canada, don’t worry.

I went through the 100% search line (it’s usually just a random search in the other lines), and I opted out of the porno scanner. The guy just gave me the same pat-down that they have always done. Nothing intrusive.

Would rather they hired heterosexuals to feel your junk/see you naked? I think it’s the process that’s flawed, not the orientation…just sayin’.

That would be a bad job. A few highlights, I’m sure, but most of the time it must be just awkward and gross.

yeah, not a job I would enjoy by any means. There is a great majority of people I really wouldnt want to be patting down…shudders.
I just wish they would spend their money on explosive sniffing dogs. From what I understand cheaper to train run and damn unobtrusive.

I just object to the security theater and feel that I shouldnt be rewarding this asshattery by participating. An armored door on the cockpit and some bomb sniffing dogs would take care of the vast majority of hijacking/bombing attempts. As for the homosexual comment… well I was being facetious but i mean come on… you’d have to be a little bit in the closet to accept that job.

edit:

I really do think every man needs to do his part to bring sanity back to this industry by taking viagra before every flight.

Great, but don’t confuse the USA with Canada.

Does no one else see the absurdity of going thru all this security crap for a 19 passenger Beechcraft?
They gonna force the pilot to refuel three times to get somewhere important?
Crash it into the Empire State Building and take out a whole broom closet?
“Take this plane to 100 Mile House or everyone dies!”

This thread sure went off topic but btw: this gay guy loves those pat downs…

Hahahaha

If harper gets his way there wont be much difference. I suppose its a good thing though I hear colon cancer is a serious killer. the more people checking it for you the better.

If I was King, I’d make all domestic flights land in Abbotsford and run a high-speed Skytrain between it and Vancouver airport.
Went to pick up my sister at Abbotsford and my other sister gives me shit" Don’t put a toonie in the meter, we won’t be here that long! She puts in 50c and sure enough we were in and out and back to her house in half an hour.
Then I had to go pick up Cathy at YVR… five hours and half a tank later we’re back in Abbotsford.

I prefer the south terminal for convenience, but if it’s the main terminal they want, that’s alright by me. I do believe that the cost of a flight will be going up though. The south terminal departures used to be exempt from YVR’s airport improvement fee. I do not know if they still are, but if they are, by moving to the main terminal we will now have the airport improvement fee added to our departure price.
