That is a very generous event to attend and is great for the kids to learn the meaning of charity. On a side note, can someone tell me why the Captains choose to shut down the food bank for all of December when many needy people are on UI and are in need and the next cheque for welfare is not until Dec. 16? I know many abuse the system but since the Nov. cheque was early and the Sally Ann X-Mas gift certificates aren’t given out til Dec.21, what are some to do? Makes no sense to me.
I would honestly do some checkin them out S& A , they are closed for Dec an the hungry people will be goin with now food. They the S&A people have thier own plans I am sure it not hockey. Wendy at food bank says they closed but not her decision.
I know that the TOy RUn this year was way down in numbers which means less cash etc. I wonder if someone will call and check this out about the closure and post in here. I think we could get the word out and food into the SA if that is the reason why?
The food bank has been closed every December for the past few years. It is a decision made by the Captains after determining various factors, ie: cheque issue, family allowance etc. for that month but I am sure that no one in serious need would be turned away. There are various food drives happening around town for the Food Bank so hopefully filling the shelves will not be an issue. I am sorry to hear about the Toy Run though, I had been wondering how they did but everything they do each year is very appreciated to say the least !
I think this is outragous shutting the doors at such a time of the year but what I have seen and heard when I went to the kitchen does not surprise me in the least, I mean it seems like a good business to get into. Almost that cult feeling to it some serious programing going on. I would ask questions about the goings on and even go to the point of asking where the dollars go. It should be open during the month and address the needs of people who are less fortunate. I have seen some people who use the food bank and an hour later in the mall or grocery store with shopping carts full, now they should be addressed as well. Come time for ringing bells it would be worthwhile asking why they will close the doors? But that is just me who questions any form of church who close the doors anytime.
There should be some kind of criteria for this place instead of the basic name, address and phone number. With that little bit of info, no wonder everyone applies and then heads off to the supermarket for the rest of the groceries. I volunteered ina food bank in the lower mainland and they were only able to access it to a max. of 6 times per year and had to come in with proof of address and a hydro bill, rent receipt and have a mini interview with the administrator to assess their need. I think it worked out well. This bank here is just giving food away, kind of a “don’t ask, don’t tell” mentality and when you are accountable to the community for their donations, they should be a little more mindful of that. I don’t blame the manager at all, she does her job but is restricted by the decisions of the bosses and it is too bad for I think it needs to be re-vamped and tightened up. Rules people, never hurt anyone.
The truth of the matter…As has been the case for many past years, in order to prepare for the Christmas Hampers which will be distributed starting December 21st, the Food Bank will not be open for its regular hours during December with the knowledge that most clients receive early cheques. However, The Salvation Army Soup kitchen and Hall are open and anyone in an emergency situation with regards to food will not be turned away. It should also be pointed out that we are expecting to distribute approximately 725 Christmas Hampers that will cost somewhere around $75,000. For all who partner with us in any way we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making this Christmas better for so many. Your help at this time of year also carries forward into 2010 as we continue to meet the needs of so many. Merry Christmas and may you experience the richness of God’s blessings.
Merry Christmas to you as well, Gary! Welcome to HTMF.
Very kind of you to post with us Captain. But the truth still remains and though it seems to be a moot point, cheque isssue in November was early, Nov. 16 and cheque issue in Dec. is Dec.16. In my books that is still 4 weeks between cheques as is the usual so I do not consider that “early”. Most of us are aware of the good and generous works of the Salvation Army corp. but it is wise of us that donate to the corp. to question decisions made. Myself, I feel this is not a good one and as for the 725 hampers to be distributed, it would be nice if there were some criteria for this wonderful deed, not just I’m here so I get it. Why doesn’t anyone see the problem with this or better than that, the people around town who have been complaining about this very issue, why aren’t you posting your two cents worth. This is only my opinion and I do thank you all for your generosity. Sometimes as I stated earlier, some rules need to apply, for everyone. I do thank you and wish you a wonderful holiday season.
So this is Christmas and what have you done, come on posing as a Captain it seems but tell us the truth who are you. The whole thing seems to not sit well it seems with some of the folk. But if you are who you claim to be and not lil Hinds Feet well Merry Christmas to you.
Just curious but who or what is “lil Hinds Feet”?
“Hinds Feet” refers to a sure-footed deer that can climb mountains to great heights, thus providing the basis for a Bible story. “lil” must mean that it is a particularly small deer.
Also the name of a HTMF poster who I highly doubt would pretend to be Capt Sheils.
I’m so sily all this time thought it was a kind of hobbit which lurked in country side lookin for christans to eat. So dum I feel now.
The deer’s “hinds feet” meet where the front feet found sure footing, much like a mountain goat.
All this talk about deer, does anyone have any meat to donate?
Thank you Jazella for the “offer” ! The food bank is very grateful for all donations at this time of year and throughout the year in general. Our town is very generous in that respect.
