Federal Government to Sell Ridley Terminals

reuters.com/article/2012/12/ … TQ20121213

“The Canadian government plans to sell Ridley Terminals Inc., a federal corporation that operates a bulk-handling facility at the British Columbian port of Prince Rupert, junior finance minister Ted Menzies announced on Thursday.”

I’ve lost track. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Guess it depends who buys it  And what they’re going to do with it.

I’m gonna go ahead and guess the Chinese. Maybe the same folks that bought the mill and brought renewed prosperity to the area.

Yup, the jig’s up for Ridley!!!

Not sure about “THe Jig” being up … there are lots of conditions on any sale … I think to eliminate scenarios such as the Chinese owning it etc. Will be interesting to see if the there are IPO’s on the market soon.

Bad idea, just like selling out our resource sector to the chineese, pretty soon they will be walking around with AK47’s like they do in africa !

When the government is looking for more money, and they realized they sold out all of Canada’s resources for a song and a dance only then, will they know they are F#*^ed forever !

Kind of like what is happening at a provincial level right now.

hmmmmmm kind of funny Veniez was canned because he told the public he was put in charge to get the terminal ready for sale and Harper and company deny it and yet 2 years latter it is put for sale

Yep. Tickles the funny bone.

From Mr. Dan Veniez himself:

The picture in the article is showing Prince Rupert Grain Terminal not Ridley Coal Terminal.

You would think being on the Board that used to govern Ridley Terminals that Mr. Veniez would be able to determine Ridley Terminals from Prince Rupert Grain…

That being said…I agree with him totally.

Good God, it’s not like Mr. Veniez was providing the snap shots for the article, clearly that was the photo chosen by someone at the Globe and Mail.

As for his points, he was the one originally pushing for privatization during his brief return to the Northwest, his legend still perhaps to be reviewed by the local populace.

The Conservatives spent more money to upgrade the site only to sell it off now, not sure that makes a lot of sense, then again Government (Federal, provincial and even local) probably need to scale back its ownership of any number of things, old pulp mills, telephone companies and such.

Selling Ridley probably is easier than oh lets say a toxic waste site recently in the news, which isn’t fetching near the massive amount of money that originally it thought it would provide, and that’s even before the final legal bills are settled.

I suspect that the Feds will get significantly more back on their investment into Ridley Terminals, than the city will recoup from unloading Watson Island.

well…I cant believe that im going to say this. BUT dan veniez’s article in the globe and mail is pretty decnt writing. BUT that’s his side of the story.

there has been millions invested recently at the RTI…

Lets just hope that whomever buys it operates it with integrity and a Canadian feel to it.

Hopefully its not another foreign (chinois) invester.
