Fall elections

So what is the latest on fall elections?Hear that four are looking at running for mayor, one being Kathy Bedard…bit of a joke as she does not even live in P.R…not sure how she has been able to sit on council for so long…I am looking for someone that actually lives here, pays taxes here etc.

Apparently Bedard is going to make a run for mayor. Garon is undecided about whether to run again, as is Payne, although Payne may be thinking of running for mayor. This could mean a major new look to council if Bedard, Garon and Payne are out of the running for council seats. Bedard is allowed to run for civic office in Rupert because she has property in town, and thus pays taxes in town.

I do not believe that Payne has no hope in HELL this time around , she does not seem to have a very good track record and she would be like the Sheriff in Robin Hood making plans to take what she wants from the poor citizens especially re taxes. Kathy who ? Gina , I believe would be more affective with a new council where everyone can or would be a player.

Care to elaborate on your reasons as to Payne’s track record? Other than just the impression we have that you don’t much like her, you haven’t really given much in the way of fact to offer such an opinion. Concur on Ms. Bedard wouldn’t be my choice, don’t see Ms. Garon as an alternative either though, hopefully some outsider of the current inner circle comes forward to offer up a candidacy of some common sense.

Thought I heard Farley Stewart was throwing his hat in for Council…Rumour?

I certainly won’t be voting for Payne again.

One has to look at her sometimes mouthy eldest son, who happens to be a member of this forum. =.=’

Hopefully that doesn’t effect her image as a politician because Rupert needs a mayor who listens, isn’t hostile to the electorates, have better diplomatic skills, and ability to attract all sorts of industries that would help the local economy and create jobs. Sheila may not be the most popular councillor, but I think she has potential. She maybe a better alternative to the current mayor if there are no other viable candidate.

However I hope she learned the mistakes the current and previous council made, such as the Casino, decisions and unnecessary spendings that aren’t beneficial to community improvements.

If she decides to run for mayor I wanted her to look at a few issues concerning this community. Here are the few things I feel are important:

  • Find ways to reduce cost and improve efficiency at City Hall and Public Works
  • Crime Reduction
  • Privatise CityWest and allow telecom competition
  • Improve access to YPR as part of economic development and compete with YXT, and consider expanding YPR when it becomes economically viable.

If she becomes mayor, I wanted her to represent the whole community and not exclusively cater to the specific sections of the community.

TL;DR: We need a mayor who isn’t Jack Mussalem or second term Herb Pond.

how manyh of the current councillors are “regular” people from regular backgrounds?

asslee?..maybe…

thats the only one i can think of.

What this town needs is someone who has lived here for ever…has NO hidden Agenda from a business perspective and will advocate for the people of prince rupert.

we dont need to sell our asses for economic development. We live on an island with about 500m of access to the water, that unacceptable.

I would like to see pressure be put on the prince rupert port authority, maher terminals and CN to promote some type of water front recreation…wether it be here there or anywhere on the waterfront…

residents…new and old…thats basically what this town is missing.

think of the issues that are important to you, your family and the community.

I agree with you Mcsash. You should run. And I’m not being sarcastic either, you’ve got some great ideas.

I’m sure that there are many that would disagree but I’d love to see Herb Pond make another run. He’s a true advocate for our community, is easy and open to communicate with and is full of endless optimism. I know that he tried to get elected provincially to bring a louder voice to our area and I feel that he has unfinished business to take care of. He’s the best guy available for the job.

All is too quiet around those who may be running. Then all of a sudden it will be too late, and we will be stuck with duds for another 3 years.

I hear Corrina Morhart will be running for council.

mcsash = left-wing version of Jacko

Sorry, just have to say that.

Either you’re exaggerating or just bullshitting. Really? 500m of shoreline access? LOL

That I agree.

I could never grow a beard and moustache as epic as his… :stuck_out_tongue:

I would love to see all 7 of them thrown out on their asses…same goes for the school board!

Looking forward to the list of candidates that you feel are worthy to replace them.

I am pretty sure the same was said about the last council and the one before that and the one before that …

I am not being an apologist for the council. There is still so much more that can be done.*

I voted for two of the seven. If those two are running again, I have every intention of voting for them again. I look at some others on council who I didn’t vote for but I think are hardworking and knowledgeable and have the good of the city at heart. I am not likely to vote for them but I can see why many people will. And, I see a couple of others who I would like to see replaced not necessarily because they horribly bad but because new ideas and new vitality are important to a city council.

  • More to be done: Maybe I am talking out loud without all the facts, (I am still trying to cope without a daily paper), but we had those public meetings a year ago and I am still unsure what resulted from them.

Why is the Watson Island fiasco taking so long to sort itself out? Is it fair that the city is being held hostage (if it is)?

What can the city do the encourage new businesses (and just not retail) to come to town. We need more jobs and when retail comes in they just replace something that was already here (e.g. WalMart replacing Zellers).

What can the city do to encourage the tourism industry?

What needs to be done for infrastructure. There is talk of $10M or so for a new RCMP building. Again, and speaking from ignorance, why are we being asked to pay for the RCMP building? Could $10M be better spent upgrading something else?

What becomes of CityWest?

How much can Prince Rupert council advocate for some of the services that are not in their jurisdiction (e.g. health, education, social services etc) that are sorely needed in this town.

And I know there are complaints of being overtaxed, so what things are we prepared to give up to get some of the things we want (which may include paying less taxes)?

I am not prepared to defend anything in particular that I have thrown out here. I know I am rambling.

I think we sometimes expect too much from council for the things that they have no control over e.g. the root problem is unemployment caused by a disastrous hit on our economy. What I expect from council is advocacy to other agencies to help us with those problems and for council to co-ordinate our community so we can work together to solve some of the individual problems that face us all.

Considering the list of potential candidate so far, one can’t help but wonder if Herb Pond might wish to run again, because really, this list isn’t much to get excited about. Mr. Pond may have made a few mistakes during his term in office, but he has more political acumen and leadership skills than any of the would be candidates mentioned so far.

Be interesting to gauge his support here, should he decide to re-enter the dysfunctional little world of municipal politics.

I would never vote for Pond. He’s more secretive than the rest put together. He’s just cleverer at hiding his own shenanigans. It would be just same old same old again.
