Nope! We don’t pay if we use the same GPS system as you guys (as kindly provided by the US DoD).
Galileo was conceived as an idea to provide some independence from the US system, with greater accuracy (Down to a metre, as well as an accurate altitude)… Although you can get this with the DoD system, if you have the correct Gold Codes (as reserved for the military).
I dont think it ever really took off because of the licensing system… who needs accuracy when you have something for free which works! I do know that because of the accuracy of the Galileo system, the US threatened to shoot down the satellites in a time of ‘major conflict’… Bless them!
