Dns...?

heyo heyo.
hope someoen can shed some light on the problem i’ve been having.
i am connected to a wireless router in my house using a line, not wireless, and the internet seems super choppy.

choppy as in i can connect w/ kazaa, and it will work all day fine, and msn all day fine, but if i go to view webpages it throws up 404s. but kazaa still works, and msn still works.

so i go into network shit and repair it, restart the browser and boom it works again.

so i figure there is something weird with how my comptuer is resolving domain names because it seems that if it already knows the IP, its all good.

is there any way i can specify how my dns stuff works /??

thanks
mu

Does it actually say “404” ? If so, then there isn’t anything wrong on your end. Just the page you’re requesting doesn’t exist.

If by “404” you mean not working, then try using an IP number to see if it works. For example, try 38.113.228.130/ and see if that works. If it does, then your DNS isn’t resolving properly.

If you’re on Citytel, you should be using

204.244.99.66
204.244.98.46
204.145.111.62

I usually put them in reverse order (ie: have 204.145.111.62 as the first one). Dunno why, but it seems to be faster.

Does your router setup have a place to put DNS numbers?

When your internet connection is working, try “start/run/cmd” and type “ipconfig /all” and see if it’s getting an IP properly, etc.

geez, i remember having to enter that as a chillun way back in the dialup days. i popped the primary and secondary dns #'s into the appropriate box and it works, thanks a lot.

i figured it would be something simple, kind of retarded now that im only living here another 4 days…

Acutally those have changed and you have the first octet on one typo’d:
204.145.111.62 wont work:

209.145.111.62
204.244.99.66
64.114.55.100

204.244.98.46 has been gone for a few months.

Whatever happened to 204.244.3.129? That was always my secondary server, right behind .99.66, back before I was rocking this DHCP noise.

Shit, we are all such dorks.

Oh, that explains a lot. Doh.

Whenever I forget the numbers, I do this:

G5:~ miguel$ host ns1.citytel.net ns1.citytel.net has address 204.244.99.66 G5:~ miguel$ host ns2.citytel.net ns2.citytel.net has address 204.244.98.46 G5:~ miguel$ host ns3.citytel.net ns3.citytel.net has address 209.145.111.62

I guess that’s why I was still using 204.244.98.46.

Thanks for catching the typo and giving us the right numbers.

Hey, I’m the one with the Penny Arcade IP memorized, so don’t sweat it.

Just a sidenote to this if you have a wrt54g or some varient I would highly recommend the dd-wrt firmware. My router was flaky and then i put that firmware on and its much more stable. Also I can now ssh into my router do samba mounts setup a “captive portal” etc. Cool stuff

Oh big oops there…

To paraphrase a line from Apocolypse Now: I love the smell of IP in the morning…

Personally, I’m not big on the smell of my own urine. . . :smiling_imp:

Sorry, that was too easy not to resist! 8)
