China only buys raw lumber because it provides employment for their 1.3 billion people, not because Bob Smoth is making $60,000 a year.
Don’t be surprised. Unless it’s a high ticketed commodity like a BMW or a Starbucks Coffee, China will only buy raw materials.
Technology is a wonderful, but it does have its drawbacks. Probably were dozens and dozens of mills there 50 years ago, but took hardly any lumber because they did everything by hand. Now 1 mill can produce 50 times what them dozens produces years ago. They built to much capacity and now they are hooped.
Alberta doing the same with oil, building up capacity like madmen, and one day soon their oil industry is going to die like Houston soon will, and the Houston mills has no issues with getting rid of their product like the oil industry has.
The sad part of this story is that thanks to the NDP,Mr Pedder was forest minister at the time, and would not allow trees to be cut in the park where the pine beetle started.Too sad! This would not have happened if Dan Miller had still been minister in charge.Just saying…
