My first thought is that about 60% of the people are not going to be too happy with the result. And a lot of the 40% or so of the people who vote for the winning party will not be so happy about who won but by who lost. Great system.

And today, I read this. huffingtonpost.ca/2013/05/09 … more263995

Less than 33% of 18-34 year olds voted in 2009. I was talking with a young person a week or so ago who told me he would not be voting. The whole process was “a poorly scripted, horribly acted reality TV show”.

Pretty cynical. But no more cynical than the fact that we get all worked up for a month so we can vote in what is essentially a dictatorship for the next four years.

I supported the STV last election realizing that it was flawed but so is our first past the post system. We need to change that to a very simple preferential ballot. Rank order the candidates. If your first choice doesn’t get sufficient support and is eliminated from contention, then your second choice gets counted.

That does two things. The person who wins a riding has to get at least 50% of voter support. But more importantly, we would no longer feel obliged to vote for one of the two main parties fearing that our vote would be wasted. How many more votes would Greens and Conservatives get if people were not afraid that voting for them would only help the party they hate so much.

Maybe then more people would get involved in the political process where consensus building (rather than the adversarial nature of politics) becomes the norm.
