Yup. The supreme court has already ruled on it a few times, with Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Off-shore is off-shore. It’s the ocean, it’s not inland waters. The BC government has already accepted the fed jurisdiction with respect to fisheries (ie: they don’t claim the strait is inland waters when it comes to fish).
They’ll have to do what Newfoundland and Nova Scotia did – negotiate. BC did some negotiations in the 80s, but I don’t think it was ever finished.
that was nfld & ns. this is more seats than atlantic canada in one province,
So politically, it’s a good idea. But legally, like you said, there’s no legal obligation to share royalties with either BC or the Haida.
The federal Liberals don’t care about BC They only need to keep Ontario and a bit of Quebec happy in order to have a majority.

MLA calls for ban on squeegee kids
WebPosted May 7 2004 07:02 PM PDT
VANCOUVER - Vancouver Liberal MLA Lorne Mayencourt wants to ban squeegee kids and aggressive panhandlers, and he’s introduced a private member’s bill to do it.
does anyone know the difference between a private member’s bill and a private member’s willie? doesn’t that name just have a rude ring to it?
If they care more about Ontario than BC, then why does BC get a much larger (per capita) transfer payment?
Out of curiosity, how is “land” ownership defined?
Do you own a “slice of the pie” starting at the Earth’s core and extending out in a wedge shape to the edge of the circumference of the atmosphere?
Do you own what’s underneath your property? Do you own the airspace?
Ontario pays into equalization, as does Alberta. BC used to do so too, but since BC is a “have-not” province now, it gets welfare just like the rest of 'em.
The formula was devised at a time when BC was actually paying in… it’s not out of any great concern for the welfare of this province.
